Mean eight minutes after 9 AM it's WWL first news on this fifteenth of January. 2016. Are big TGI else. Happy writing to you and yours mr. like on all of those. Listening to our broadcast here on WWL radio those hardworking New Orleans. Yeah that need to Friday absolutely because they didn't hit the power ball. Imagine if you will. That you get a text message from 100 children. And in this text messages attached a picture. And in this picture. Is the winning powerball. Imagine if your son told you. Dad we hit all the numbers we hear her billionaires. And there is the proof right there celebration broke out in the California nursing room after a worker. Got a text message from her side telling her that they had matched all of the powerball numbers. Turns out her son was playing a prank. I just the heartwarming story unraveled. Hours after the manager at the park avenue health and wellness sent there told reporters that the staffer. Was. He knew we wealthy person. I mean there was that date this went out for a couple hours are out big party are you issue celebration. Jubilation. Before. Mom found out that her son. For whatever reason now decided to play the field. I just I don't know of the dynamics of that relationship maybe we would understand it better but I don't understand. One would be the proper punish it for Joseph Torre also and G. He pulled this prank on you guys I'm on any I don't make it the right order I think cruel joke now. There's nothing funny and there are a. It's a joke it's a prank. The 56 year old nurse's daughter. Said. I'm my brother. Mean. I understand that as a joke I don't get it I don't know why you'd want someone. To. Feel that sort of amazing jubilation. Normally you know to then slam them back to reality and sends the the congratulations. And all the excitement Photoshop the tickets so it looks like the real thing this game and the media was alerted everything. Outside if I ever invite you to my birthday party. Or my anniversary celebration or my wedding or whatever it is and you bring it one of those fake scratch off tickets that says I just won the huge jackpot if that's obscene and I'm only for me to find out. That it's a fake and you're playing a prank on me. Promise he'll reverend Richard and ever party noted. I just don't understand why it thinks that's funny you may get a broad out the door to. Why why would you want it and and I can secure that somebody hate. Well yeah house senate and a mop you got and I'm in them down somebody you really dislike the law but somebody you love or someone who is your friend. Would someone do that I just I don't understand. But will leave it there are some people think it's funny obviously there's a market for this they make those scratch off tickets for a reason people buy them. So they can give them to people and make them think that there instantly rich when intern in truth they're not an only going to tell them. A little negative and we'll talk to you a little bit later you're 930 with mark persons here on WW. Well right now my continued talking about money but. A different aspect. Do you want everybody you work with. To know how much you make. And you wanna know how much the people around you are. Do you know how much your co workers make. More and more companies are shifting to what they call open salary policies. Where everybody. Knows what everyone else's salary. Is that a good idea or bad idea. And with that make things awkward in your office. And how would bosses. Face new challenges. Managing the workplace if that's the case Roy Cohn is joining us on the live line he's a career coach. And author of the Wall Street professional survival guide success secrets of a career coach Bora right. Good morning David good to speak with you. Yeah glad you could join us because when we saw. An article about this trend. Honestly I was a bit surprised because. I have never been an advocate. Of telling anybody how much money. I just don't think it benefits me in any way shape or form for the people around me to know how much money I may. I believe that Miami good. Negotiator. I believe that might work speaks for itself and I believe I can make. The money I feel I deserve and that my boss will pay me for my performance. And that. Based on my performance and I think I should personally I think I should earn. A good salary based on my performance. But if everyone in the office knows how much everyone else makes. What does that do to the office dynamic. Well from my perspective transparency. In concept. Is an incredibly terrific idea but in practice. It can get during the NC. It can lead to a pretty well when it comes shoot. Sharing information. And he's back having much. Because often when we aren't yet numbers that we don't have contacts. Weekend people in our minds what those numbers mean. And we can read into it and think that logic why is gave earning more than four. What it is doing their early morning. That that Turkey deserves to be making. 50% more if indeed there being terrorists win leapt up to firm device. Yang and I get what you're taking and I think makes good sense. If one person makes a whole lot more than some other people then people start to wonder wait a minute what's going on here and they start to assume that may be something less than savory. Now happening and you get the allegations that someone slapped their way to the top or somebody's doing this for somebody these favors or whatever it is. I think. And this is just on first blush the people who are in the most. Probably would not want everyone in the office and Obama I'm. People who are lower end of the scale may say wait a minute I wanna know whatever announcement because I think our. Undated disagree with you on that. On just. On on one one count and what when it comes to although one. Sector you know little little technical glitch that I take it take care of that ringing found because it's. Nothing drives because you have ringing from the nobody is answering some songs absolutely. Are right aren't out there so go ahead. I liked the idea of having senior about management it's clipped their compensation because I know that. That you know my company is making a hundred times or. I'm more than me. I'm going to be concerned about that because I wanted to know how much more value is adding to the organization. Bride when it comes to working with yours. There's real danger in knowing much. Because our ears may have different skills and different altercations. That are very difficult to measure. And it it it's the financial. That. Week. We don't jump to conclusions. When it comes to. Trying you. Figure out what will work do you need action now. A little bit but not much. I would not recommend a lead into understanding what the salary ban. So if you work in organizations. You should know what the arranges for your position. So that we you know where you'd it and in terms of that overall range. OK I can see that where generally speaking a company says. This position is worth. Say 35000. To 52000 dollars this position. I however is worth 275000. And provide ranges from what people who hold that job should arm. Little League so I don't know what I need to do in order either earn at the top of my range. War what I need to do in order Q. Acquired the rights you'll graduate of the next range. To get a promotion. Okay so with companies like whole foods and has nine B 1000. Employees. Too much smaller companies we are seeing a trend towards this. Open salary situation where it's all disclosed would you advocate. Advocates to a company that they should adopt the open salary approach and for your clients who are using you as a career coach. Do you think it's a good idea for them to work somewhere where everybody knows what they are or do they have a higher earning potential if nobody knows. How well they've negotiated or how they've been rewarded for their performance. Well in certain companies like whole foods you'd have argued that people. Where minimum wage employees it's so in that particular hate those people should have a reference point. Iowa and though what the bottom line it is in terms. How much I have the potential to earth. So when you are dealing with an army of people like whole foods there's really no danger no in fact collected in relation. It's really very power ball. For the employee the employer about. Operating employ he's absolutely. And for the employer that it is now it sure is that there is complete transparency. On it not a bad thing when it comes to our whole route because so many people are doing the exact same war. And when you haven't organization. Where their. Is that. Salaries. There are rules for. For increasing that base salary by adding certain. Qualifications. By working overtime. By a by our drew the number of years that you were pretty organization. So your system in place. Huge companies like a local record. We get into trouble though and small organizations. Where there are no formal systems and procedures in place so complete transparency. In small company. Apple and the world on create payouts. So let him big companies like army is unique and now. And that makes sense and I can see the difference I'm look at though beyond this trend of just telling everybody what everybody else makes some companies or even letting the employees decide. What everybody earns and there are liberal votes if someone wants a raise and they come to the employees and say hey I want a raise can yell vote Mir raised how do you feel about that on. The everybody having a say in what everybody else does not only knowing what they aren't but having a say in what they. The acted very dangerous because we're really talking about popularity. And and our colleagues were popular. Are not to surely the most valuable colleagues and they you know were partners with the immediate danger is politic here. In getting people liked him and indoors them when they're really not happening now into the organization. So you make friends you get more money even though you're not really helping the company earned more. This year. And there that the Cerro. Roy any final thoughts before we let your run here on this trend towards more companies going to open salaries were everyone knows what everyone earns. Well you know it's suggesting there's a lot of inspiration that's readily available hours online or give any question about what you should be hearing. What you companies should be and there are. Web sites like salary dot com and offer valuable information sort researches here your brand when it comes to our. Understanding at a price yourself in the organization and it marketplace. Roy account career coach author of the Wall Street professionals sure were survival guide. Success secrets of a career coach thank you so much pokes him find a book on Amazon I'm guessing. So I right thanks for joining us and sharing your expertise we appreciate it have a great weekend. You're here what do you think folks comic 2601878. Text me 87870. Do you want everyone in your office to know you make and you wanna know what everybody else makes is open salaries. A good idea. Or a bad idea let's talk about it here on WW. 9:26 on your Friday morning welcome to the weekend I'm Dave Cohen in fort Tommy Tucker on this Friday morning as week. Looking ahead to Hines a nice day most of the clouds start nuclear out and it sunshine today. Highs in the mid sixties just about right for this time of year middle last until tomorrow but we'll see the clouds build back in and we'll get rain tomorrow. During the late night hours should be gone by Sunday morning and much colder weather comes after that as we expect freezes. By Monday morning once again. On the North Shore. We're talking about a trend where some companies are going with what they call open salaries. And it can be awkward in some companies adjusting. And others are refusing to do. I was raised. To never ask. Never inquire. And never tell. What my salary wise or what anybody else's. That we should not judge people based on how much money date are we should judge them on. If there are a good person and how hard they war. And those sorts. And so might caught when I first saw this response was it's nobody's. Business. How much money I may. Or how much money anybody else makes other than that between them. And their boss. But summit texted me and 8787 instance in my experience the companies that make the pay rates public knowledge inside the company. Have better memory now. Than those that keep it secret. And I guess I concede that. But if you're coworkers know how much you make. What keeps them from telling anybody else and is that anybody else's business. And I guess that. Kind of way I was raised to never talk about earnings and salaries. And never worry about when anybody else makes makes me initially think this is a really bad idea. Now the president says I worked at the company for 37 years never knew what everyone else may. And they were happy with resisted their 37 years. But as our author and career coaches pointed out sometimes it's gonna create problems. If one person makes. A lot more than other people. Folks start to grumble and mumble and wonder. And rumors get started and things get said. If one person happened. To negotiate a much about better salary than others in the same or similar positions did then people start saying things like. Sampras of the slot there wait. They must be giving sexual favors to the box that's why they get more money. And I just can't imagine working in that environment I consider myself a pretty good negotiate. I think I'm pretty good at convincing in employer of the value that I bring to a company. Al to consider myself an extremely hard and dedicated worker. And I think that deserves to be. Rewarded. Width. Pay equal to the effort and the value that I bring to the company and if somebody else doesn't work as hard. Doesn't promote themselves as well. Should they earn as much as I'd. But as somebody on the other hand is better at promoting themselves. And I am and makes a whole lot more than ideal. Then maybe I'd do one it's a difficult situation difficult question you can text mediate seventy it's seventy. Corporate since Texas in throng was sleeping near what it in the now ethically speaking at pac and I think that not hard to answer that question. But I think it's also unfair to assume that someone who makes a better salary is somehow. Doing something like that. An unsavory. Behavior. In order to make more money will continue discussion will also talk about the Oscars. Coming up after the news here on WW around for that. We go to the newsroom at WWLs day. 34 minutes after 9 AM at every WL first news on this fifteenth of January 2016. TG I am happy Friday ash usually the first month of the New Year's party app over. Cut the fat. I don't mind that have a month to you turn your head and so the month has gone next thing you know it's going to be Mardi Gras. And it's going to be Easter. That's good stuff you can get misled as a kid and you idea that you moved all over the play caller yeah and navy brat. So you must salute some cold places why did. I definitely had some snow in the various places and had a nice low sleek. Sled didn't feel weighed down. You know on your stomach you have the little steering mechanism in the front her homework and that that's that made it very cool. While authorities say Canadian man at a slant. And he'd decided to pull it cross the border. With a 180. Pounds of draw those straps of the check out this plan. Marching through those snow isn't a Fiat would have loaded with drugs drugs. Xanax. 300. Vacuum sealed bags. With xanax and duffel bag. On the sly comic art with a street value of one point six million. Dollar it's amazing how those bills. He is now and Vermont prison. US attorney says that the when he went Gerald was apprehended. After cross the border from Quebec along new railroad line into north Torrey from. You know you think about you have to protect the Mexican border gallery Alice talk about ultra low and everything counts now the drugs that come in from Mexico. You know think about guys dragons led us through this snow with. And he was wearing that white come camouflaged. And a are you had that two right initially it sounds like he had a pretty good plan on there yet as bomb was. But there are sensors or across the Canadian border and the Border Patrol agents were alerted when he triggered a sensor as he came across the border. They followed up found him. Found a slide on the drug's worth one point six million dollars and and cut interest here and is just wander wonders. Over on the stock. I don't buy at the demand obviously for drug off is massive. And so people are willing to go to great lengths. And take great risks to try and transport drugs and apparently that does from Mexico but from Canada. It wonder if down a couple of the ball on the Canadian border. To even bigger border thank you David with Nike and but when he met the more forces here at WWL. Am FM and count right now wanna talk Oscars we got the nomination yesterday for the academy. Award. Joining us to help us discuss. The nominations is senior editor and principal film critic for the Atlantic Christopher Orkut more aggressive. Good morning good it to be here. Glad you could join us and let's talk about the big elephant in the room first because it's everything I've seen and read over the last few hours. Is the criticism. Of the academy. For their not being a single. Nominee that isn't wiped. Yeah for the major acting categories. Back and alt alt when he away I think it's a bigger deal that it would be otherwise because this is the second year growth and that before electorate had happened since 1996. You know I think it's a little different from last year elector there there's a movie Selma that was really that terrific movie and deserved more validation that should adopt. And didn't get them for a variety of reasons including epic the fact that they they rolled into the out very very late in the year. This year you know I think he commuted to unfortunate I think it's you know it's it's clearly a coincidence it's not that there's any great conspiracy among the temporary thing. I mean that was my question are there any major African American and Asia and Hispanic. Actors or actresses that were in roles in the past year that were worthy of a nomination they got snubbed. Well I would pick and you know where their people will be nominations of yet and there are always people who work it out if you don't get mentioned that there are coming out is secure around. I think the big ones. Straight up account Compton with the movie. That they did very well it. I've got to work the Screen Actors Guild and the producers guild Writers Guild and usually that means that you get up for best pictures of people thought it would it didn't. But what do you know what sort of on the ball was it was not a lot by any means. And acting categories that they the actor who was most likely. To get the nomination was it your elbow room and difficult piece to donation. And you terrific in the movie let you use supporting actor in the year of supporting actor feels incredibly deep and literally. Fifteen actors you pat appalled shocked that it operations. So again I think it's important then you know it's sort of unfortunate coincidence in particular that it happened to your route but it is not part of some grand conspiracy. Okay now I'm like guy. You're wiped out here to just for full disclosure. Button. Based on your coverage of Hollywood and the film critic as a journalist as a writer do you think that the academy is racist. Now now I mean you know the weather did do I think that sometimes you know it it's not it's not adequate rate that the mean being kept me. Is it ought to let people out of certain generation. With the certain background. And today. Gravitate towards certain kind of don't. Sure and I think that it would be better if he can't afford it or not only in terms of that this is the retroactivity truly important anything else. I think that would be helpful as I do think that there would be that they get overlooked just because you know with a bunch of balls like guys. OK well fair enough it's mostly old white guys who do the nominating. And then but the academy itself is pretty diverse right once the voting happens for the winners. You don't. It's getting better and they and they are trying to have more I mean they had very few people each year so you know it's it's an evolutionary profit but but what if he can't rate is now a at all. Now can you talked about. Was anyone overlook clearly the revenue it was not overlook it's the big winner this year in terms of nominations twelve nods. And it's doing fairly well the box office brought in nearly forty million dollars last weekend. That's nice to see that a movie that is a popular and be. Wins the most nominations because it's not always that way is. No doubt that certain actors. Now the Redmond is in good position I think you know I think still at this point. Spotlight the film about the Boston Globe team that that that sort of broke open that. The Catholic Church scandal is probably still the favorite to win best picture at the Redmond is certainly. Gaining ground in the big short movie about but that financial classic but also very good citizen and expect to the. But I want to jump right here in New Orleans attack one of the scenes assumed in the building in which I am sitting right now so I don't have a special place in camp at. We've got to have a special place in our heart for that one because they turn New Orleans into other financial capitals around the world hurled. And film that home movie here in fact people would see Brad Pitt walk in and out of this building because as the producer of the film in the offices were in our building where. Where our radio station is located that was kind of cool and we're kind of enjoy that whole Hollywood south getting some recognition. But you think that really. The front runner for best film. Is probably telling the story. The exposing. The child sex scandal in the Catholic Church spot. Yes I think that that you know but again the direction definitely got some momentum a little nomination yesterday. It'll be you know it will be interesting to see had a handicap because political doctors but but I suspect it will be one of those two in the big sort of media the next. It was you know it for the year was with a lot of good movies but not with any sort of you know a huge. You know hundred or so pound gorilla. That is clearly whenever I. Well speaking of 700 pound or 800 million dollar or maybe even billion dollar guerrillas. When we come back from this time out Chris I wanna ask you. About Star Wars. And if it should have or shouldn't have gotten. The nominations it did and shouldn't have gotten more and then look at the acting categories and Steve you think has a leg up. There we're talking with Christopher or senior editor and principal film critic for the Atlantic. Talk about the Oscar nominations. As we get ready for the Academy Awards more after this on WWL. Nominations. For the Oscars are out. And we're talking with Chris shore senior editor and principal film critic for the Atlantic about them. And Chris dot Star Wars obviously breaking every record in terms of box office today for the day's seventh Star Wars film. Got some nominations for things like sound editing in and things like that. Should it have gotten more and we talked a little bit about how popularity. And critical acclaim don't always go hand in hand should this film have been up for more awards or should it have been up perennial. You know that's an interesting question I don't think. I don't think anyone really ever ever considered it at the best picture nominee. And I don't know that's a good thing or bad thing I mean that I think it was certainly it could add that the picture as avatar. A few years back which was effective through the favorite and the best picture category. And so it's one of the things that you know I think at think just there's sort of that. A mood in the critical community in the mid in this critical community with it was not a bit like him he was very popular got great reviews. But is that it wasn't. For whatever reason what sort of best picture nominee. The one nomination that it didn't get that ethnic media ought to them for protect particular reasons one of the big stories this year. Public category fraud. In the actress nominations. On to the actresses who really should bit. In the lead actress category Rooney Mara for Carol and we should pick interpreted Danish girl. Upload lobbied really really horror to be put in the supporting actress category which is really not an off the boat had. Major I'll talk a little politics being played there maybe they thought they had a better chance of winning in the recording category. That's exactly right and and they are correct one of them almost certainly going to win that supporting actress. You think they were lead actors but I think perhaps it was we were everyone thinks they were not given that the frustrating that you can sort of kowtow to them. Will this kind of like the martian winning best comedy or musical at the golden gloves how does that make any sense I got nothing out. Outlook and it turned up recently admitted that Barak. That does not accept paper or because of those two. Actresses. Pushing to be supporting exit but the best actor category. Kind of camped out at me in you know Jennifer Lawrence it's great great actors but that would be nominated for joy optically in the Indian. Not the best performances and if there's if there's one. Acknowledgment or didn't get that maybe it would've deserved. Is in that we can best actress category I think it would and it they've nominated accurately Communist young actors is unknown. But she was the anchor of you know the the biggest movie of all I am if that doesn't deserve at least some recognition I'm not sure what with. Yeah I always find that because avatar was. Opt for a ridiculous number of awards and not necessarily considered a cinematic. Classic. But it was groundbreaking and it was a huge box office success record setter at the time. You look at The Lord of the Rings movies did very well. At the Academy Awards all the old. Right and they and they were also huge blockbusters in terms of how much money they drew from the movie going public so. And to sometimes understand it if it's the biggest movie of all time in terms of box office sales. That doesn't necessarily make it the best I get that but you'd think that it would at least be somewhere panic in that realm at least of the discussion. Yes no it's it's a privately that bit in the opposite what amounted but the nobody would you really talking about it at the potential. Nominee now on that the pathetically. Matt Mack after he wrote. Without it for ten Oscars including. Best picture best director of photography. And it would also you know big action element and it's terrific one and a real night. Throwback to sort of practical effect and stopped them didn't use a lot of computer generated imagery mean they actually built those are. Drove across the desert at sixty miles an hour with him being jumped off one account to another and it blew them up. There was an all green screen or any charity or anything like that they were doing this stuff. Now and and and and I have that I was really gratified to see that worked brilliantly hoping. That between that and so we're gonna start to become some push back against both computer generated imagery on an effort to go back to more old fashioned filmmaking technique. Chris before we gotta run I wanna go through the top categories and just get some thoughts and predictions Romulus there with the best. Actor who do you think is is really in order to kept. Real you he would be overwhelming favorite I don't think there's even by a close second I mean you know there's there's time left but as for somebody to make a run but. But it's extremely there's one. One award that I think is pretty much closed on operated it. All right and in best actress we have Cate Blanchett we have Jennifer Lawrence. But you don't think this is necessarily all the candidates that should have been there nonetheless it's who we've got. Who do you think is the favorite for best actress. I think reworked into a win for room it was a small Libyan she was sort of the paper it. Even before yesterday the room it also extremely well with the mad Max Headroom for the for the big surprises. Yes that you see she that the room was nominated for best picture which people were sure would. Would be it was a surprise nominee for best director. And so she already ethnic had a leg up on the competition and and given how much they can't electorate I think she's the favorite. Best supporting actor who's got that one. You know I I think it probably commemorate them into two very different performances I think if you think about Islam is probably going to be no it. There's definitely from the adult involved in the air but that decree with the dignity is very good net. I think you know there are a lot of people would like to go back and you know. Diplomat and Academy Award beat the other the sort of opt into the Specter is mark violent corporate despite the spill over pretty. And you mostly stage actor but but it tremendously successful stage actor but it really really really night subdued performance. So my guess is one of the two of them but that and damage before there were so many actors who could possibly have been in the Catholic. We're really. Or interesting to salon didn't win anything for the rocky movies but now he comes back all this time later and could win for creed and final we all got a few seconds left. Just to name who do you think the best supporting actress to beat this. Well if you're going to be ready America for Carol or at least the candor that these early. One of them will be very happy that they had pushed to be in the support Pakistan. And not the actress category and we sure appreciated how can we read more of are your thoughts and about you Chris or senior editor and principal film critic for the Atlantic. You can play in the Atlantic dot com. Couldn't look running good for oracle or are. But it's been a pleasure though. Thank you will be number I imagine we'll talk to again before the big night coming up next month. Christopher or the senior editor and principal film critic for the Atlantic on WWL. All right folks wanna thank you for joining us for the last four hours a fine thanks to Sheldon master control Jordan for producing Diana our program director of operations manager.
