Why am I learning this we are working to ending that question being passed saint Martin's episcopal school opens an innovation and design programs working interest. Preparing students for an ever changing workplace. Lies my plan isn't contaminating army and pixel system it is as they are over economics as well as well as the cameras. This eighth grader is among hundreds of bright minds participating in the greater new Oregon scientific engineering fair details on what's new at this year's regional fair and how young minds on solving big problems. Joining us now is Gary Mason director of sake Martin's episcopal schools their innovation and design program. Thanks to being witness thanks for me tell us about innovation design program. So our innovation design program started four years ago. And idealists who really transform education by taking a different approach. Creating. Learning that much more or. I deeply meaningful for the students themselves in connecting it to real world problems real world issues. So for those who are not familiar with the terminology. Are the discipline Evan what does that really entail and you say innovation. Design. So if you've ever been a student inciting class and wondered why am I learning that's yes we heard a checkup. We are working to ending that question being cast so starting with why it's important with the students and I just explaining it to them. But it. Creating an experience for them where they. They automatically know why they're learning with their learning is mostly in math science. And and the other is a geography. So it doesn't matter the discipline of the subject matter it doesn't matter the display and doesn't matter what subject or what grade level. Com we work through you know creek prekindergarten Ali through twelfth grade. And just as an example of math. We had a project where we had. First graders learning about the honeybees and how they're disappearing. And so. The first graders were very into helping save the honeybees. And there's article New York Times and had a pie graph and it. About the percentage of different crops that are pollinated by honeybees. And some of the students aren't asking why do we have to learn about pie charts the party know that the and the subject matter that they care about is related to it. And so they're even more eager to learn the math concepts that they understand the real world application. Well in the media we asked them who what when lion talents of the wise is very powerful. Party get a first grade it's a really embrace lie. I think he told them that I mean these are dying and that we need them in order to have all the food that we have on our dinner tables and they are motivated. Movement and that motivation extends to a high schoolers and yeah that extends all the way up and even with a with a Honeybee project we had first graders to. I'm at the end of the year the teacher and I said. Hey that was greatly you know we have this really wonderful project and experience it lasted for most of the school year and see guys next summer and they are next school year and they said. I don't know the honeybees are still dying you need to come in and meet us over the summer and continue the project in so. We he worked with the group of of students over the summer he's our first graders. And then the ones aren't able to join us over the summer bird. Concourse running that's virtually and see the level of engagement EC is incredible. Gary Mason joins as director saint Maarten to school schools innovation design program. And as it opened the gives family center for innovation and design. And Garrett talking about it so give us some of lead this the space and the elements of this particular. Program in center. Shirt so our senator is armed just about 5000 square feet. And contains a number of spaces one our main space is called the ideal it's a presentation space. But it's also a giant collaborative space for class or multiple classes to be able to work and on all of our furniture and equipment is really flexible and can roll in and out and pulled up and pulled down. And create the type of environment that students need to learn it right because it's different in. One class vs another grade levels subject matter that's her thing. We have to break out rooms our record breaker whom blew breakout room which are two other smaller spaces where a class or small group of students can collaborate. The walls are drier race walls where students can actually just right directly in the law which is fantastic and then. You know we had does. Mr. due legal home what exactly is and to bring their little kids in who haven't quite like understood that schools a little bit different than. Coleman in half after a a bit worried and integrity levels. We also have our digital lab which is the heartbeat of the center for innovation and design. It's where we the students who either do their two dimensional three dimensional designs. Which then get produced in our fabrication space called a build shop I'm we have two laser cutters and that's basis he NC router. I'm mark three predators. A lot of our equipment is really state of the art mean and teaches students the skills that they need to be able to compete in a very technological world. Or the work in the digital lab could be kind of the end product where they're doing editing of video or audio. Which is recorded in our production studio. And so we had giant green screen lots of professional equipment. Red camera as well. A professional grade five K camera. And it really sounds exciting yeah and then we have one last space which is a wood shop arm which is a little bit more familiar to. Those of us that are a little older and having those in the a lot of schools but those of credit. Gone out of style and we'll bring those back as it a traditional space to be able to do woodworking in addition to all of the high tech. I'll work in our belts what about what. In with teachers how do you do that because it CNET conceded the first graders and other people being excited about all of this but. Howdy Fuld and the teachers and a great question so we have a five person team at saint Martin's. And we are we are co curriculum designers with teachers. And every time we work with them. Depending on the grade depending on the subject matter depending on the particulars of the students that are in that class. We work that teacher to design the lesson design the project designed whatever experiences they want to. I'm depending on the needs that teacher. And so. It's you know a process it's actually just meeting with them and working to develop that that project over the period of time and implementing with the teachers who sometimes were co teaching. On the other times where there's just to support for teachers so how are you preparing students for tomorrow's workforce because. It's changing and I was having a conversation just recently where you look back even five years ago while we were talking about how we would doing it the technology. It's a back twenty years that is managed only five years. Yeah. That's the patents and other questions. I mean taking even a professional like. Think social media fright that that is that concept didn't even exist and now we have tons of people that work and that that area. On the though workforce is changing and it's changing faster and faster. So a lot of our equipment and tools really give the students at technical skills that that they need for. I'm kind of competing and attack on technological world. But really the focus of the program is much more on and bottom those soft skills. Or non cognitive skills there's lots of different terms for him but. I'm having empathy. Be able to collaborate with peers to think critically think creatively. Collaborative link yeah exactly so having. Those skills that apply. No matter what career that they find themselves in that are useful in their lives just interacting with their family with their friends. Those of the skills that we infuse into the curriculum and make sure that. On the students are learning those in developing those. Did ten years ago but have argument they're not soft skills that critical skills you need these skills so let's get to that's very nice no matter what it looks like five years and now like tin I twenty you have the foundation. To be adaptable and also apply wood Q Kevlar to meddle with the profession exactly you know why he's so excited I have a wish at a Cameron's studio. Your eyes are ablaze with a enthusiasm. What makes you so excited about what you're doing. I think if you watch a first grader tell you if they come in over the summer to work with them you little light out whether your teacher this year just the parent alert and another member from the community. The students inspire me every day. And he's had people who like come see and check this out yes we have offs people from the community they come and teachers all across the city are across the state alum and actually we had. For the grand opening we had some visitors from New York command so school's all around the country are really interested. And work that's happening at saint Maarten. This new facility was a one point two million dollar project. Funded entirely through individual and foundation donations to the school so that's really impressive as well so they're investing in debt of thanks for being with this Garrett. Yes thank you so much for me and joined by Gary Mason director of saint Martin's episcopal school is innovation design program. 400 plus metal in high school students from around the metro area have been preparing to take part in this year's a greater New Orleans. Science and engineering fair. It is talk about it are fair director doctor and that Earthlink. And one of the participants in this year's greater New Orleans science and engineering fair. Anthony rose an eighth grader at Ben Franklin elementary school. Thanks for being with us we'll keep thank you for having us we'll doctor Earthlink it's always a pleasure to have you on the show to talk about the fairness is the flip sixty seconds to 61 61 year he asks. And it's been going on for quite sometime now and we're very excited about the increase in participation. We actually split the fair this year where middle school participants will be there to be judged on Tuesday and the high school students will be there on Wednesday. And it's strictly so that we could incorporate more students give more students opportunity he was an ideal what takes place during the fair. So the students have been nominated by their schools so the students coming to us are the winners of their own school fares or they are. Exceptional projects in some way that have been nominated by their schools. And it's open to participants from Orleans Jefferson Saint Bernard in plaque commenced Paris. So the students come and set up their projects and go through a safety check the day before they are judged. And then there's their for the judging and they get to talk to professionals in their fields and explains science inquiry in the engineering design. But they've been working on for months now. And then of course the judges have to determine the exceptional projects and we have over 60000 dollars in prizes cash awards prizes trips. And this is due to our wonderful sponsors and our major sponsors mr. Britton Sandefur and Patrick Taylor foundation. Can't thank them enough and this year we have a new sponsor Entergy Corp. And there actually even providing a scholarship powering the future scholarship to a graduating female senior. What do you think has happened what's been the evolution as to why you say more students this year. The projects have guns I guess from the lava in the volcano things that we used to think hi when we came to these types of fears. Lies it's still of so much interest now. Well there's been a great strides in science and technology and there's been a lot of publicity about the need for. Students to go into stem fields science technology engineering and math. In our area in in Louisiana they're expecting an almost 20% growth rate in those types of jobs over the next ten years. And if you just look around the greater New Orleans area he seat whole medical corridor deceit. You know information technologies he financial sector you see the energy sector so there are a lot of opportunities. For our kids to stay in this area. And to actually go into these types of feels. And so we need to do what we can to encourage that so there's been a lot of publicity about it so I think that generates interest. I think prize money also motivate some great is Erik did a great incentive which is really very exciting. And ice after the international science and engineering fair has really been keeping up with the times and that is who we are affiliated with that is who we follow. And we have to abide by it you know their standards. And they have just created a whole slew of new categories that range from robotics to translational medicine to systems software. And so I think it's peaking the interest of a lot of students. And we have been getting a lot of push for middle schools to open affair and increase the number of categories because we were limiting knows. And so we've been able to expand to thirteen different categories. In middle school in high school we have seventeen categories. We're joined by doctor Annette currently director of the greater New Orleans science and engineering fair she's been talking about the middle schools in particular. We're joined by an eighth grader actually. Anthony roads Ben Franklin elementary school and you're going to have a project in an entry tell us about your entry my pledging. Isn't contaminated in Laramie and detection system. It is as there were over it was an armor Tesla as well as a camera takes. And what it does is it fussy like hazardous I am on an open field prelate do is double quotes the safe sol pricy. Linehan is oh contaminating it. Violent day. Now we use my phone a couple of forms coming into my camera. Albion and have a visual the last guy there over is a controlled and have as the bigger problem myself. He'll Alan Dooley is Alan controlled over. And may go forward and find whether the contaminated by many. And I do my armor tells me so to pick up that contaminated and farming community contaminating. Item that is given off Madoff for games. And put and when they get up play above my guess lesson which is used to tell me what type of offer gays is it is giving all of. I'm impressed and lost all of the same time. That is amazing how did you choose this concept of this idea for the project I children traction because I simply wanted to take. The only error as well as gamecube was out of the way of harmful chemicals that can be given enough. My pop idols because two an eternity on TV for different things I interest Obama something has just given all of Canton for areas it can hurt and affect a lot of people. And the people who also have to go in and help them and Holloway as well Phil Lendl is probably take a human element completely out of the I helped save lives and so what I wanna do is Armani viral route to do but it basically who would do in the faithfully. That is commendable that is exciting as well we understand why imply important assist. Did you always want to do something like this didn't the interest come along because of teachers and other people telling you that that you really good at this. Or maybe a couple of years ago I don't know music and Alex I can't clock or animal and they helped spark interest in things like I'd venal engineering. And it basically they because last year I mean again since it. And this year is not an and talented but I want to do something bigger and better they can actually save plaza just landed tech. So this is where I just came from the decline McCain. And up curling and are you can't be partial but as you listened to that is that's why specially middle school school is really want to solve and help. That's why there interest it in this well I have to say if you listened to what Anthony is talking about I mean you mentioned volcanoes which you know back in the day was a demonstration project. If you listen to what Anthony saying he is problem solving and he's using critical thinking. He's using systems software he's programming his rover he's designed his rover he's telling us he built his rover. So this is like the epitome of what teachers hope for. That will come out of a science project where a student looks at a problem or an issue. And tries to determine tries to analyze it and then come up with a solution for it. Or in the scientific area to do something to do some sort of an experiment to help understand what the problem hands. And so yes this this is very exciting mrs. Really what we're hoping for and this is what inspires kids to pursue these fields and I was also struck. Anthony and doctor are laying about the empathy it's like you really. Care. That people don't get hurt in this yes. And he people who. Because a lot of prison Gizbert in effect of the people who are round of the golden age and that can't figure. And they also. Like it if again this is given all in and it just Brandon Webb became the center console games and went areas I think maybe a flu at a different things like bank. So Wilma. So let him off I wouldn't use it would put it in an area where you can't contain even you can't flick told me. Mostly not all the labor solve the problem for CB is if what you without that they have to go out at pick it up and is still going in against. Both are over. For a good very tennis it's official and pick up stuff and also Johnny's pre difference. That's amazing and that gurgling how important the if you notice empathy in collaboration. With these stem students and in the in the projects in the and the problems that there's a trying to solve. Yes the wonderful thing about science fair and an engineering fair projects. Is that it takes you out of attacks but it takes you beyond the textbook. And connect she with the real world. And so it gives students the opportunity to take a look at the world around them and you do see a lot of empathy UC people who are trying to solve problems. You know that they do impact humans and you know he typically in this area you might see a project. That has to do with better use of energy to assist more people with getting the energy that they need. Are you might see an environmental project that has to do with coastal restoration. So it's really giving it its giving the kids a world view. If you would by asking them to take a look at the world around them. Pick something that their interest dizzy and and then learn more about it and taken a step further and do something about it. In the Philippines president Thomas possibly I was and yes I do sure that I have been Lynch's. And it definitely. Crusade because when I was younger users because I like make solemn promise solve it made in the met area. Blake but as I've been on my views he announced they are. I have expend in my area problem solving the computers. And that she says systems. Engineer anything like they because. Over. We should anyone in my parts was after a lot of troubleshooting those are faulty to get to bring it may just not ethical and I have to overcome. Way I think of it fun doing a lot of bears research. FO all the common enough that those from a project definitely I can overcome this my project working. As it was before. Well these have you kind of narrow down what she'd like to do the proverbial question when you get older. What will you contribute to the world as an adult. I want to be a computing approach the problem. Maybe do like help. Held my interest so I computers at payment they'd do more as as different computers and different elements of the day people came down. And an artificial intelligence estimate on efficient and I are over. Blame it on a different skill that is that have gone out in their small ship picking up I am a big maybe a large item move. Contamination. That people never seen before. Which is even more help to people so I want to do what I like to do which is a good engineering. And things innovative but I also want help on this as well. Amazing abduct her laying up throughout the four days still to be able to participate in social media contest he tells a little bit more about that. A number of years ago we. Had a conversation about how can we engage the students even more in what they're doing and how can we give them an opportunity to share what they're doing. Beyond talking with the judges that come and talk to them. And two we've had a lot of help with this and came up with these social media contest where it's students post on FaceBook Twitter instead Graham. Then they are entered into a competition and we have prices at the end and we asked them throughout the fair to continue posting. And so it builds excitement and allows them to share and there's a little bit of excitement about the awards. But the 61 annual we'll take place the greater New Orleans want February 13 through sixteenth at UN now that after that where do the winners ago. We'll the winners of our fair go on to state. We can send the first and second place award winners in every category up to the Louisiana science and engineering fair. But we can also send winners to the international science and engineering fair so we send our fourth top. Senior division which is high school winners and two teachers to the international science and engineering fair which takes place in Los Angeles this year. And I do wanna say that if people want to come and seen these projects they can come see Anthony's project. The middle school viewing time for the public is going to be on Tuesday at lunch time into 130. And then if they want to see high school projects they can com Wednesday 330 to five and we also have a time slot on Thursday. 930 to 1130 that they can come to you it's that the human performance center and of course if they want to you find out information the location at times. That's fantastic this is very exciting I must admit you've been talking to adopt an expert Ling director of the greater New Orleans science and engineering fair as well as Ali and how to describe you Anthony rose just up on big Franklin elementary integrator. And his project is within arm's reach. Contaminated environment detected slash retrieval system. Gonna get that right it's okay if they both of being with that the Yankees are my. Enjoy today a guy in John. Oh the New Orleans chamber of comers lots of great of this being planned in particular for the first quarter when seventeen. Everything's lined up calendars out and assist this great opportunity with our small businesses. 400 members 80% or small businesses with 58%. Have fiber lest employees so. The nor us chamber reflects the New Orleans. All the entrepreneurship small business start up and the number one request they have forces the opportunity to meet other businesses to either work with them buy from them sell to them network with them so it's a great opportunity for small businesses in the community that chamber had a lot of events and wanna succeed let over a hundred and who is unbelievable and gets it just thousands of people come out for these things on an annual basis. The next big one this coming up of these educational seminars. And how we do that as we partner or professional groups to Louisiana slips idea of CPAs. Actually brings financial walks sixteen minutes seminars together and we bring the audience our membership. And then we do the same thing with the American marketing association on what you need to know about marketing your business so. It's giving small businesses who do not have a big budget for staff development doing more research. To have professional people come in and give them. Some directions some ideas some simple opportunities that they can fold into the work schedule. And again the sellout. That's it and that's the networking before we invite people to come half an hour before hand that is the networking and then contact. And on this one it really is some great presentations by professional people on the field you mentioned the word network in many times has he been on what. Why it's so crucial for businesses and business owners. To be part of some type of networking event the smaller of the business the smaller of the budget for marketing. And the other side of that is when a small business doesn't have the staff present they're not making money so there's is fine intentioned. Of developing your relationships your network's marketing yourself and being in your business working in the business so. Most of our events are sixty minutes people plug and play we realize that they're not at their office working their losing money but the value added. And we measure that by our people coming in all of our thing sell out so we're looking for that nerve the challenges to keep it fresh. You know we don't want people to your board it's not a repetitive process is new information you also can't have told us is the new fun thing we started last fall. Is spur new business is looking to get new people to come and so were only doing this through social media and I'm so you have to like us on FaceBook and then about ten days out. We just give you the location in the time and again 5200 people pop up it's a small eat smaller venue. It's a venue that when people talk to us we talked to them they've constantly changes and again it's part it's making it kind of hitting gauging. Exciting funny event as well as your working. Also audit what you do is a ribbon cutting about that and how important is that for a business that's kind of where the rubber hits the road your meeting in this hot but north it's actually put their business plan together their locations staff the human joys there. And we have these great three foot long golden scissors from their photo op is huge the ribbons wide. And it's their colleagues their staff their family. All their suppliers and it's just kind of a great celebration we marketed to our social media after the amount with pitchers as do today. I've got to tell me it's one of the highlights each month when you meet this young person normally mean the age gap bronze but. Garnish younger people thirties forties have their idea work their idea and now they're actually getting to implement their idea. The landscape that we're seeing the new new Wallace which is a lot of some of the old guard new guard alternate melding together what are you seeing. The biggest thing honestly I've seen what is eleven have peers now after Katrina. It's an attitude shift I think the people who were able to be you're able to survive that horrendous experience can do people. You know get on the train get out of the way you know it's can do people and we collaborate. As we've never collaborated. Unprecedented. There's fourteen chambers and greater Orleans region we meet quarterly to collaborate. Every fall we do a collaborative. Chamber event a rock and bowl 600 people come out. Local chambers all bring their membership and on that given night who's ever free goes and again it's another one of these exciting moments in our community that I just think the difference for me eleven years out is the attitude is the focus and I think it's the data driven conversation of best practices. Just no longer and do the best I can people do more research to ringer and. Now what's the lay of the land how could be more successful who do I need to talk to that there's just. Stronger approach in this week's success record speaks for itself will.
