Good Sunday and welcome TV show thank you so much for joining us today I mean both Monica year coming up. Leadership committee if includes many different context and he didn't really poor. In sports more on the mission of Jason Anderson foundation for youth sports. Each year the New Orleans a regional leadership institute or normally. Brings together an impressive class of business civic and community leaders from the ten Paris region to talk about the upcoming class and how normally. Is promoting regionalism. Is Eric Caulfield the recruitment chair and board member of normally. Thanks for being with us Eric I am so glad to be here to soak so good to be here oh wonderful wonderful people are really familiar would normally you've been doing this for awhile. What do you do how do you get forty or so business people civic leaders and others together. For these types of classes. So the first thing I just wanna say is is is that northerly is one of the premier leadership programs as as you know. And so part of it is just making sure that we try and do outreach is broadly as McCain. Have an opportunity to come on your show is is is a tremendous. Honor. And very excited about that the chance to get the message out so that's the biggest thing is just tell as many people as you can about it. To get the alumni activated so that they can tell their friends and their colleagues. And in doing so we we we hope every year to get a very good class which manually. These people are already leaders in their sectors in their industry may be a public policy maybe elected officials. Why are they interested in spending this amount of time. To get to go through the leadership institute code and that is the million dollar question actually it's the one point five and one of the great things about Norah is is exactly what you said you have leaders from. All different kinds of industries so you've got public sector you've got private sector you've gotten opera but not for profits. And in what are the benefits of doing that as you really get to hear perspectives from folks who are leaders who are more accomplished in their individual fields. And what it does is gives who have very very diverse perspective on a number of different topics so even in some cases when you think you know a whole lot about something. When you have a lawyer who's talking to a doctor who's talking to a school principal who's talking to a judge about health care something about which none of them maybe maybe specialist. Did you your perspective better informed. Not only professionally but also about people's personal experiences and it makes you think about things in just a different way in what happens is as you go through the program. You come out of it up with a different appreciation. On the other side I think that's one of the very. Appealing things that folks have and why New Orleans is a special. And I think it's so special going forward because now we're told that we don't hear each other. We begin our camps we dig in and that's it right so you're able to find that sweet spot with people who may have a very strong perspective. That they're willing to listen to figure how this all are absolutely and and I think you hit it right on the head and and from one example. It comes to mind this is something that I experience when I went to three years ago. It was the opening retreat so none of us really knew each other this is our first time being together. We had been through a whole series of that it is the first day. And so we had dinner together at that point cocktails. And there was a group of us. That ended up at the table together and it just happened really organically we didn't intend to sit by each other you actually get folks were at different tables and as people left in this one group just kind of coalesced together and we do we didn't know each other very well that. And so you had folks who were from the very conservative back and had some very liberal back. Eight spread was probably thirty years at that table you had multiple different races and two with three for races biracial folksy rat table. And what happens is we ended up having one of the most. It in some ways transformative conversations. About recent opportunities I ever. And the reason that we were able to do that was because you have folks who were very passionate about what they saw a very informed about their particular experiences. In theory different. And so what happened was when we when we left. I don't think any of us got up from that table that night and we it it ended up being very very late into the wee hours of the morning. I don't think any of us got up from that table. Thinking or feeling exactly how we did when we sat down and in what I can say about that particular an action is some of my best personal friends in the city. I met that night and some of my best friend state. And when I started my my company. Which I did Durham onto the year. When in my first clients the first offer of work with that I got with somebody that I met that night that table Gunes eventually became I think really that's the magic normally. We're talking about normally this program as you hear the passion from Erik Cole field he's the minority recruitment chair and also board member they're gathering their next group the cold hard the next one that's coming up give us those dates and more about the program because it is a commitment on the part of the class for us yes indeed so. I applications are being accepted now did the due date is may the fifteenth. Fines for Sox who wanna apply you can access the application online and to lead out or. Fort you have to give some information about you warm you're employment. And some of the work that you done in the community and get two letters of recommendation so those are kind of the mechanics. Of applying there's a bit upset about too is an outcome come back about that in a moment. But we're also having some April sessions of folks wanna wanted to find out more about newly they can do that as well. And you can find out the schedule for that online as well ignore it or. For those who are accepted into the mighty class of 2018. And and there's a lot of pride. In each one of them to a classes. In an in every time we all get together there's this this friendly and loving rival read it that comes out classically fourteen of course. Is the the ultimate class but for those who are acceptable to the mighty classed when he eighteen. There is a tuition which is nonrefundable which is which books campaign. Any covers everything so it covers all of your meals all of your expenses it comes to retreats that they have at the beginning and the end. And and also and above for folks for whom that might be a burden we actually have scholarships that are available which are based on need. Now. One additional thing which I didn't say about kind of this program as it runs as you said for nine month to starts with the retreat to separate tree goes from stuff to me. Is September to may. And you find this a commitment because you really committing apps and again these are very very very busy and influential involved people that would apparently they find the time because beacon becomes very important to them yes absolutely and and the core of it and I'm glad it's you that yes that that that. The question that way. Is really the sessions to which we have which are one day series of seminars which happens once a month during the night and the nine month period. And you have specific topics that we talk about it each one of the sessions after that month. I so it can be everything from health care can be criminal justice can be economic development. It can be any number difference the environment sustainability. And that's one of the reasons I think that that folks come and it is it is it is a commitment. But what you find and I found this when I went through is each each time. When it's when it's time for the newly sex. Are you find yourself really looking forward to going and spending time with your classmates. Even though you know it you've got to you know you've got to apart the work that you have to come back to and people stepped out for periods of time and ignored me you know to try and do. What were they came but but most folks when their deer are really excited about it's like a mini mini reunion months a month for nine months that is amazing YouTube leaking here. The participants and what they get out of it let's say someone doesn't own a company isn't an elected official. And it wants to go what would be the benefit for the employer. Say that this is a good thing for not only you but also our company. That's right and an end and that's a great question because for newly. Of course is is a benefit to the participants. What if you're sending folks in and we realize that it's I don't mean investment for the Christmas and their time but it's an investment of resources. For the employers. And what they get in return our employees who now have new leadership skills who have new connections that they didn't happen before. What are the benefits of the program is that folks can come together. And learn team dynamics in the way that you might otherwise you learn leadership. For many different groups in many different context. And you get really informed about a lot of different issues that you might otherwise and so for the employee you have an employee who comes back. Now who can do more for your company. What they also were able to do because they now have connections across many different fields and many different other companies and organizations is that the employer now has bridges to to future partnerships that they can make which can help their business as well. What about the community at naught because again it's it's a multi parish reached that you have but how that the builds community. That's rate and and and again because you have folks who now know each other. In their connections that can be made across pair's lives. Their new partnership second before it benefits the region. And it classic example. Of this is is something which happened just a few weeks ago I was actually out at a birthday celebration for a friend of mine. In I was sitting and an I was talking to to another friend. You know it was just a social occasion. And didn't wanna buy and Orly classmates. Comes in the room. And I see her and of course I'm excited this year now now I have two beautiful human beings after like really need to know each other right they don't know each. And some hate you should meet and so of course they get to talking and talk about you know talking about the work they're doing and I think this is a class. And one of them works for. Housing developer her client she's consulting her client is huge development corporation is looking to do work. In southeast Louisiana in the New Orleans region actually. And it turns out. Bet my freedom works for a local developer who had been in conversation with someone about developing a piece of property. But it turns out to her firm was actually looking for a partner. To work with to develop this piece of property and of course they get the talking she says will look at it we will look at that exact same property it turns out they've they've been. And as a result now we have a project with the development project. For a very important a piece of real estate which might not have happened otherwise had I not known this particular person and I think that's a very. A typical kind of normally story that happens and so for community standpoint. When you have folks that are connected together who know about each other. I'm beacon calling each other and in that just been if it's ever. And we hear that more and more I also I'm an adjunct professor at ads as eighty university and we're telling the up and coming. Media folks that it's more than ever it's who you know it's relationships is that comfort level that. If I call and you I call on Eric I meld that he will deliver a you'll connect me with someone who can deliver. That's right that's right and in one of the the things about New Orleans the alumni base is is absolutely phenomenal like I can't even. Tell you just how how rich and in deep into it it it really is. And into early alarms again our our group that we've all gone through a common experience. And and when folks call a folks reach out to you then. And as part of the alumni networking gonna respond just because you know that this person is. It is is about the good of the community. Just a couple of examples that you know the head of the urban League City you're the business council the jazz and Heritage Foundation Saint John Packers president. And numerous banks in the region all Morley alone. So whatever topic it is it just trying to get involved in. There's somebody who was expert and in a position to probably be able to help you in doing and that's just one of the great things about shortly. My guess is Eric called field and he is newly recruitment chair and also a board member and I very passionate advocate as you can hear yeah. Yes and we've been giving a lot of information but you do have a series of recruitment information session you just had one this past Thursday but you have some are coming up in a poll and Al for the month of April yes yes talk about that. And we would invite it these are a free and open to the public so anybody can come. To find out about newlywed your interest in and joining clash between eighteen or something new I think about. For the future we have a lot of folks who we. Have been trying to recruit worked for purely. Item again. You agree excited to take folks from all different professional backgrounds is even media in these days. I think highly talented. A radio show host it's what appear to be in high demand normally I'm just saying we we we we are excited about everybody rich diversity of archives. But yes we have in information sessions where folks can come in here from other alarms I've been to the program and also to have whatever questions they have answered. An enthusiastic yes indeed indeed there there is a formal graduation ceremony which we have it becomes at the end of the TD retreat. Which which happens as we said in May. But there again everybody. It is coming together and there is in the binding is exactly right and I remember. And our graduation class without going into meaning. Details. I just remember it was one of the most unlikely. Groups of folks were active at the location and lots of activities for us to do. And they had to folks. I come again. Just from very different backgrounds and ended up spending in half the time the free time hanging out together. One extremely conservative. And another and is very liberal again. Eight spread. Probably twenty years. Different races and ended up becoming fast friends because of this experience like you said there's bonding which happens over that year. And in the end we all just felt like oh you know nor he can't be over and it's not what's the website for the application process or to at least not putting application online. Foundation provides children in need an opportunity to participate in organized sports in their community where giant to buy it Jan my end to member of the board of the Jason Anderson foundation for youth sports. And Chelsea Hilton from project peaceful warriors and they are a recent grant recipient. So we'll talk all about that welcome to you Jen and Chelsea. Let's begin with you again tell us more about the Jason Anderson foundation for youths. It was established back in 2015 after unfortunate tragic accident. With a friend of mine from college Jason Anderson and he was very passionate in sports he actually worked for the New Orleans Saints just. Land here in line or alliances and establishing a chapter here. And the purpose of the foundation listed. To ensure that kids in the community have the opportunity to participate. In sports whether it's equipment arm registration or anything that we can do to help underprivileged kids or just other kids that are in need. Financial support to help them. Sports scene that started the foundation and so basically how does that happen how do you help children in need really participate in sport. Any foundation. Or any and youth sports sleek and submits a grant applications that they submit that to the board. We have a fall and spring awards and I guess decision. Making process and depending on the needs so. Each organization would it. Specify or describe the need to you know if it's 500 dollars and that can provide registration for twenty kids war. Can provide equipment for a certain number of children so. We review the grant applications and then award then based on and need an awesome match with our mission and our vision for the foundation. We're going to be joined now by Chelsea Hilton with project peaceful warriors. Chelsea did you know about the Jason Anderson foundation for sports it's sports. I did not I learned about it and luckily they Chang him I I think connect and it through both yelled at. And cycling and various different community organizations in the city while was it important for your organization to try to get one of these grants so this is an outstanding opportunity for eyes at project peaceful lawyers brings Yemen ninth honest and to schools of those students and teachers. And with this can't we are going to be able to pilot a program where we he. One of our high schools in studio art teacher training so that they then have the opportunity. And to go out into the community and teach both children and adults yoga. I at a community suntan or at a school and so it's it and really exciting opportunity he would get them out and getting back and an opportunity to learn how to teaching interact with the community center of the great guy thinks I see more sciences and libraries. Kids in yoga and my foot this what is this all about well yet so I hope. It's what we do is they focus mostly on seeing such an experience high levels of trauma in school as they aren't explicitly taught coping skills. Board different methodologies here. Cup and deal with stress. Or are with their emotions. So it's important and then what we bring in as like really accessible tools through preening and an inning and then relaxation in mind fondness. That quick then waves. A stronger ability to self regulate and increase self awareness and so that they can go into the classroom and be successful. And and thinking out in the community. We're joined by Jan my number she is a member of the board of the Jason Anderson foundation for youth sports you just heard Chelsea. Hilton project peaceful warriors the organization has received a grant. From Jason Anderson foundation for youth sports and you mentioned that you can this is near due to huge and making sure that people are aware that we have a guest there a chapter. In in new all of. Yes so we are vivid chapter started in Delaware our Jason is from men and we've. In our first year granted 181000 dollars to youth sports organizations so we have the opportunity now to expand into the nor Owens community and this is the first cramped and we are awarding. And and hopefully am will begin to establish a presence here in this community Harkin the community help because again this is exposure this is letting people know that though we are here in New Orleans do you need volunteers tell about how people can support it. It's a great question and you know. We the foundation has been generous enough to give us some them some funds to starts in this community so. We do have the grant application online on our website Jason Anderson foundation dot org. And so if there are organizations that can benefit. If they have children who are needed them to participate in sports they can submit and apply for these grants already. And additionally now we are looking at fundraising opportunities within the community so that we can use that hand to financially support additional grants. Yeah you both talk about this but we often hear how important with the role that sport who played a young person's life do you find it more critical even today. As as you mentioned the Chelsea that she has sometimes kids don't have the coping mechanisms to deal with life's stresses. Yeah I think it's really important and Oslo there's been a shift in education where the majority of the school today and scenes are spent. Yes seeded and and focus on really rigorous academics and winds less of an opportunity to news throughout that day. I'm so I think not only is an important for Arab and physical development but it. And we also know that play and I am cooperation and teamwork build really important life skills they also help with brain development. Making it a really crucial part of childhood in. Absence and your thoughts on this and I create it was fortune and up to participate in sports throughout my child and through high school on. Consider that on the lessons learned from some of my coaches and even some of their relationships that I built through organized sport I still have to this day. So it's definitely important new again. Fantastic how can people learn more. About the Jason Anderson foundation for youth sports and do you offer the grants at a particular time of year are throughout the year and so the current practice right now have a fall and spring. These Arabs approach is very much as those that approach because black men earn nine in the classroom and on their own 3% and the entire nation. So we want to convince them that they should work there than we should. We have to start a slow is it to get them into urban classrooms argent doesn't matter as long as this the presence and increase those numbers from 3% to more. Our approach is urban classrooms folks who public charter school is there's such an acceptance because it's so rare sight to have that interaction with that. Teacher of color.
