Hello everyone and welcome NG united ways lives united I'm Terry Westerfield. And joining me today I have friends is from now that's that cancer association of greater New Orleans and asked to gals I wanna look at the program Tammy swindle executive director of cancer association of greater New Orleans welcome damn right thank you. And today our first time I guess I am pleased to welcome at least 70 Elise is the executive director of tax free shopping. But today she's representing faster gals in as a self proclaimed fat details diva role. Egypt is more about that self proclaimed it sucks I I don't. Ladies say you've for Jordy media day and those of you moral listening and can unaware of southeast Louisiana has a blueprint for prosperity to eradicate poverty in our region were strategically investing in programs and initiatives collaborations. And advocacy efforts. To meet our community's greatest needs. We have a bold vision of equitable communities were all individuals are healthy educated and economically stable. In Jefferson Orleans plot commend Saint Bernard. Saint Tammany has to. And Washington parishes. Even with insurance we know health care can be costly. And for people with diseases like cancer treatment can often lead them teetering. On the brink of bankruptcy. So since 1958. K no more cancer association of greater New Orleans has been the local leader. In the fight against cancer. And Tammy had no it's a nonprofit Georgia not a way of southeast Louisiana community impact partner. I always say this for a very small. Agencies who have really big impact. Tell us what some of the things that you do on behalf of our our good folks here. Plus clad excited I ran the numbers for last year and now. We helped over 560 cancer patients and degrading or area. And I do need to say we do cover a few other parishes just in case some of the things do they also covers Saint John saint Charles. The pollution saint Mary terra bone an assumption perished. So we try to cover the needs thirteen pairs and part of it is him within your mission I was created to help the financial aid. To those who are suffering from a regularly were. Founded the board members wanted to keep that money local that it wanted to go to any national organization. They wanted basically it was Paramount that local donors be able to keep those funds locally in united way played a big part of that and in enabling us to keep these funds local. And I love that since 1959 we've been able to keep them local. These local pharmacies. The majority of all of our patients come from university medical center auction her question out. Two lane. East Jack incidents so many participating hospitals that refer patients to us and we help lift. It is that kind of interesting without expanding Medicaid where our prescription costs have gone down so we're able to help with more utilities. Rich if we have a grand transportation. Food. Household lending to keep those patients in their home is that you know if some of diagnose that cancer and yet 36 treatments back and forth to hospital. It's gonna take wearing hair on your budget for your gas for your food for everything so. I really try. Since becoming director Tony twelve to. Never turned down a reasonable request. And it's and it's so important she said it is because it's local and hoping local people. And I think about a cost involved and I think about the types of cancer here there were something I was just reading the other day. And it is says that according to the Louisiana cancer research consortium a New Orleans. Louisiana has one of the highest cancer mortality rates in the nation. With annual statistics and it didn't American equivalent. Of about 160. People dying from cancer is this date. Every week. At all. It is an end in. And actually they were inner cabinet for twenty years now and and looking announcing things changed. And cancers at the highest mortality rate in Louisiana number one is lung cancer so that is definitely something that people can control. By not smoking not starting smoking or quitting as soon as you possibly can because as soon he can quit. The better chance you have a long survival. Colon cancer and that's going to a doctor and have an the colonoscopy decent and making sure you're up to date on even though political test that they can do breast cancers number three with mortality. And breast cancer is something if diagnosed early in the early stages has 99% survival rate. So that's something that can definitely. If you're going to have your mammograms on time usually forty and above. If you if especially if you have a high risking your family together freckle on a racket to gene your grandmother's been diagnosed with breast cancer your mommy sisters your aunt's. Make sure you're going to documenting your doctor know at what age. They cheer they only had breast cancer you know maybe differs some 75 verses somebody's forty easily younger someone's been diagnosed they treat your doctor knows that. What's interesting is pancreatic cancer has moved up to the fourth in mortally. He has to be lower. Prostate cancer used to be above that of pancreatic cancer is actually moved to. Four spot prostate cancer liver cancer and in leukemia so those that Tom in Kansas who with mortality. And it is you know we're looking is it insurance isn't but now more and more people are having insurance. You know might teach changes down the road with that design that ventures and they're getting tested. But we do see a lot late stage cancer person that goes in to prevention. That before you know preventing you have to have. Education nation. Awareness that yes yes getting information out there we're in the schools. Our health educator Ashley Mickey is actually in the Jefferson Parish schools. Running sixty elite programs on just that prevention tobacco cessation. Breast cancer awareness. Nearly grinning kid know early that they had they can't have a big impact on their health. What they do now on their teenage years really affects them later in life even skin cancer skin cancers known to be. The number of sunburns. And exposure here and there is pulling ladder a dog off my face it skin cancer or. Is it something. It can touch literally hit you won any any sort. And that's why isn't what you're trying to keep local dollars raise local dollars he local archer how local people. And that's where human to united way we've we've. They with a before try to help we are just one of many supporters because quantities got to bring you would accomplish this and and if you're here it. Fast again this is something. That it astronomers I was looking at my information. We did it turn twenty and it's between our some trying to look and go back and and god bless Diana Lyons whose without her sister out here and our damage he's done so it's it's it's amazing 200 dollars and all the crew you're here to date talk a little bit about it. Because after all the non profit organization to do like to inspire. Connect and celebrate. And Holler and how we are wired it to empower and you're here to support to extract important while being exactly. This just l.'s celebration on on so many levels it's Whitman who are here for other women to help them. In so many ways and tag no of course has been a partner for years and we are happy to have them both patients brought to happen. And just elect our listeners know you have four days get as creative juices flowing if you like to participate. In Arabic Asia's broad challenge because. Girlfriends alight bras they're close to the heart and always there for support I'm yeah. I didn't and now. But it is. It's it's quite important in this is a minute but first though let's talk about because the date it's this year where they have just about a month out. Because it's going to be what June 22. Through June 24. And at most it's going to be capped headquartered at the JW Marriott out I believe. Yes it normally is that an apartment now for a few years. We have a Thursday night event that she usually dinner somewhere something that's just our special guest normally a lot of people from out of town attend that when. And then on Friday as well we called our women's workshop our leadership conference. And this is where. That women of the community we bring some women from out of town command and we have lectures and just. Would really feed off from each other so you're not going to adjust to learn that going to share. And I was really empowered by this actually the first time that I went to missiles like you know I think need to write a book. It right there's so many experiences you have and when you talk to other women who have these things like you know there's a story out there tell. And so on we empowering youth to empower others. At bats Friday in of course Saturday is our obligations from luncheon. All right we have gone to (%expletive) I think it's a test will come back and talk more of the day at a cantor but right now is just a little bit because. You mentioned breast cancer and it is number three in our area and DN TME. Tees because a lot of people. No are you hear about it there's a lot done to promote it by. People may not be as. There are things you can do self exams you can do in the number of things to help and most importantly go to the job. To get that Democrat an inning and they are showing it they're calling it more instead of gossip magazines are calling it self awareness about the fairness. One of the when at the statistics out there is that you know knowing. What's going on with your brass since last finally go to the schools are taught to students about not only breast cancer but knowing what's going on with views so if you do happen to feel a lump that you know. You won't think that Ellis I think to multiple challenges that news you know until you'll know exactly what's going bowling survive. And it really is important that women do so many times women are diagnosed with the disease anytime madam and Carman Denise this is so important because. Women especially when their diagnosis of breast cancer they end up with mastectomies and reconstruction. You know I hate to say is the sometimes. They are losing jobs. Because they've been out for two months they lose their spouse you know so don't let alone. We've had several patients with husband lost a job in two days later the life was diagnosed with breast cancer and so when you're talking about that economic. Pitfalls of cancers just amazing and I don't mention this. We don't have a lot of organizations actually do you know 300% below or above the poverty level you know I don't really believe. I really think when you're diagnosed with cancer it doesn't matter which she may if you have a need you know I was certainly try to help. And it its own board especially when you're talking that you gave the example the woman who might be transportation. Husbands lost to John of the things goal in into that too I know that you can help. With bra fittings for prompt these crazies to opt for wind waiting rather. Other things if you're undergoing. Kimbo it may cause your hair fall out in just general support groups and only other things and that's why things like fest gals are so important because. Is Brooke and you're going to celebrate. Those who are cancer survivors belief diet and end or her husband both may be in and dying and if I'm wrong he will correct nano. But it it's. Let's try to celebrate life. For those who have beaten cancer and to remember those who haven't it's a little bit of frivolity but it's all done in good good. On that note when we do we have a vote vocations brought lunch and we have ten survivors. That are models. We have if Ben Stein Mart knows it and so they come down the right way with their beautiful clothes on and they're treated as models and it's really spectacular bet every single person in that fashion show. Is a cancer survivor. And the other gorge closed the smiles is this said that they would there's always a surprise to me like read error I am yes as heck everything. It is it it's. It it could it binds these women together but yet it's more about other shared experiences as well. And just seated them just the smile that faced harassment on the make up apply. And it comes to running down. It's pretty fabulous it really is and the bronze that are everywhere. Got to explain but nations bras how it began what they're about to. And right now I'm taking this moment to to get a little. Child out to a dear friend Jeffrey tackle Wayne who makes and horrible. Both nations bras. For the girls faster gal for the ladies to have. To aid to use in in to have promotion an otherwise it's just the fabulous creation so let's talk about those in need of. This is so popular initially people word donating prized decorating them for the competition and it it got so popular that they had to say you know. We're gonna have a competition now and just only lets sum up again there are so many there was so many is that this is a hugely successful event Africa had now and for fasting gals. And it just takes a little bit of creativity. An aunt Tammy can tell you some of the fund Wednesday had to. A couple Wes Kate I'm in Atlanta drag. So little red beans with some Tabasco in New Orleans theme of course plenty of football scenes and patriotic thing bras but it. Really they can go anywhere. I just whatever it you know you think we'll work something new and we got a lot of creative people that there's so I'm sure it hasn't toppers this year as well. And these key it well are they ever warned of forest a little stroke we'll talk about it you exit and that is a yeah. Or something others are grab bag and Wear them and that's always surprised the air traffic out. Some of the art pieces yeah him any amendment it unseated her bra not rocking Tutsis. In Italy Spain that he as their agent their beautiful. And they get auction don't you know I have a friend who who purchased one. And believe me she's as beautiful uptown home you enter in here is a mannequin. We're nothing about this incredible broad and that is something to think about what you urged. She's cancer survivor and she wanted to honor others and the artist who did this. Username and more time differently. But is it's beautiful tomorrow and misses on good fun but for. I very serious costs absolutely it's amazing with these draws. In and I give kudos to the Iranian officials rituals that she's had a really unique idea she'd like who wants to slash you know raising money down and runs in the it was oh win at Atlanta race very true and again I don't do those guys into it you look at a delayed into a crowd fund you know the fund raise ha. And sell him or using a crowd funding page again indifference to donate money and women do it in. Response to different you know they asked for and that's been diagnosed in one on their friends and have a story behind it so in that. When that pop. Bras are dying in Maryland generates money in those top three bronze will be auctioned off the allegations brought. And it is a good nations bras is all cancers you know Yasser have to adjust to it because we have different mutual friend of Marion Kansas from eyeglasses yeah it's all cancers are diagnosed with so many chances in this. Isn't so much out there. But these broads are really cares I'll tell you the one year someone did a Wonder Woman brought and I really because. I got out. Frequent and we can only describe it even better. For many of you to go way back I think one. Does anybody remember that the famous okay first of all it's gone with the wind the wind scholar and O'Hara makes that beautiful green down out of the race. With some want to correct on that because Carol Burnett used to play. She's proud she is ever ride I walked in and laughed so hard at the British Roddick is there was that. The curtain rod. With that fast that hat they'd made it a whole Rodham evolve as the fringe and it was just. Clever clever line is that it in from some photos from past winners. And I didn't what did he can you give the website because I don't think we don't know that it's on UST towns and it is. SP als dot org okay because it is or fund a nonprofit Brian at N dot com. Forward slash bullying a bra and I. Laying. Up and are I everywhere. And it Mitchell and you don't not only the bronze on about this. A lot of women we'll take bras in purse. Double a little bit and meeting on the eve. Yeah its first. You know you can smell the coffee beans who's just attitude yeah rotten luck that Leo lesser cute those executed. From who's been making with Karl. You know liters. Like gators when where a little yes so it is. As far as I don't at all around just a bra on. And and it. Well reluctant to having fun because we know those who have survived for those who haven't. Awareness awareness education. And now for those who had to have or perhaps need breast reconstructive surgery. Restoration is something that hey you know is involved Italy and therefore Biden better ago plastic out because we're supporting you in that effort. This is just announced that it is just an amazing opportunity for women in New Orleans and really written women all over the country. But this is Kim's board equaling and seem to Keller into when he tan. Found a lot of women who are going under reconstruction it had a mastectomy and they're going under reconstruction. First came sport realized that. It chooses were covering it covering the reconstructed knee and then it's they just had the bill passed last year where. Even Nolan may have interest or find company and has a mastectomy five years down the road she may decide to get a mastectomy she is a different insurance company. You know customize it and you'll be the different company whatever reason. That insurance company is now required. And not all surgeons. Take care insurance he might have to shop around you can lead in chances are you know that is something they are required to do. And with restoration. They we have grants up to Tony 500 dollars and this is to help women. For those two months while their out of surgery so you're having your reconstruction. Now I have to take two months off from work. Some of the may have used all their short term and long term disability up with the treatment. They may lose their job. It just puts women and finding you know this kind of really goes back teen runaway with keeping people in their homes in keeping them from falling off that edge and volunteer pollen into the abyss upon liberty. And so you know we've helped. We helped women we we've had women and you know that people in the amazement as. But we have had women in analyst surgery struggling not working and then they are booted out of their apartment. They lose their house and they going to you know I'm just so many things that happen and sometimes are able to help with that. Down posit that first month's rent with that restoration money. We can help with child care with what ever that woman needs to try to get through that two months doesn't pay a hospital bills because so many. Surgeons and physicians. We'll donate to we don't want to it all go to one potter uncle whatever that is to help that woman get through search. This is kind of good gap I I think of that some hunting you do a lot of kind of little gap funding for these. These other issues Taka transportation. Helping if they've lost employment. Again we're going to mention the waves an end. The these are these other. It was not in a woman field Olympic demon sleeves you know there's just so many things at home with cancer diagnosis. And so you know we tried to really. Get those practical things out there some little sweet things to you know we have a little group called on the people program people program that our. They crushing heads for home and they'll actually crashing your net a little. There culminated not rockers. But there you know I can't lie. Does crust pizzas for the bras sometimes when they don't like the anti nausea jesus' other one alive here as so we can give those up for free when people currently awaits at the opposite donated. And a lot of different things that are donated the office they just need to call us and talks about what we had to make that if you wanna call us on members' final four. 733. 5539. And we will just released him you know someone somewhere is running to grab that and paper so please give that number one more time. Again it's vital full hour at 733. 5539. You find us on FaceBook cancer association of greater New Orleans can find us on our website www. CAG. In oh dot org you can coolest cancer association of greater New Orleans and Kama. And that's it again just wonderful things that are going on in this whole weekend coming up support of empowerment. We mentioned about the bug issues bras and right now ladies and gentlemen everyone who's losing it's not too late to go on in part of that crowd funding. He took a few more days and then what will happen. Tell us to lease on the day of the obligations Brothers went to we talked about that people who modeling other close. But then they have an auction ride. They have an auction with some art items but they're also auctioning off the bra and I have entertainers will come and and to add this this this. Luncheon is great I mean it's really a feel good bunch. T go in there people get up and dance when it's over they're still playing music that you're actually table dancing with other members. The models do one last stroll through and then come down on the stage. Come down off the stage and you know meet with the people so it's it's a really great event I think tickets are 100 dollars. To support to Arab that age is bright as well as. Rest restoration restoration yes of eight. And that does agree to exit the lovely lunch now gallon you of the lease. The web site is that we just take us to gals dot org is better to ask that or at and you can learn and you can get to they're still tickets available for folks to a tournament because. We would love to have a sell out it looks like this year they gonna have the album jailhouse rockers who. And though rolling elvis'. Yes so they don't have the entertainment will be where some hundred dollars. Just just there's so this is definitely at a very important event. And albums so Mattel and she's got me on an and CIS New Orleans so half a local celebrity that we like San press she has a finding your voice presentation actually do for us wonder why she's she has her around she. She actually X to be involved with fest this was not something that. They came to her she came to them and sent you know we I wanna share this with fuse so she's gonna do a little presentation about. You know how women help other women and how it's important to find what's inside of you. We've got to mothers because Arab release of the your headline in the world when his leadership conference. On Friday June 23 will be Lyndon Eldorado are helped by an ounce in the game right and she is the co owner of V Colorado Rockies baseball team a huge construction company that has often heavily nationwide. Be interesting to listen to her perspective. Business and how. She worked and then and a grand dealer again Robin Barnes and who wore in song bird so there's just a lot of people a lot of and opportunities to network and again to come together. And help. Raise money for very worthy causes you cause. Unfortunately we know too many people who are touched by cancer which had some of the stats that we've got a 160. People. Per week in Louisiana. Died cancer. There's not enough money fund just you know I did way or faster gals are anybody out there. To help all the people that need help so that's why this is something that really if you get behind. Every little bit counts. Timmy and keep looking and pulling it can't. So we're very small and then three full time in three are the smallest of this where's it she's one of the smallest agencies. Basic huge amazing which you do with cents bonus is that people lock in and say. We've just been at it and I don't know yet I have I I have aspirations I really do I I just went to a conference. But other executive directors like myself. Who were formed in nineteen. And you know the one thing and really took away from that is that you can support groups in the need in communities so my aspiration or cat knows who at some point. Be in a building where we can have support group so we had people come in and and be supported bullet other people. You know we're going to the same thing. And you know it's what we get from the community I do have to mention a couple of things Lee is Susan G. Komen we just received a loan program for Susan can bring me. To help breast cancer patients that are currently in treatment. Outcome we receive on that screen ministries has been very generous to us Entergy and has been you know just gave us a Korean that is just wonderful. And so that's something that would be able to help patients live throughout the year. A couple of other organizations treacherous were on we write grants to. The garments fund a local group of bartenders in New Orleans and dedicate one night a month to dedicate their donations and their tips and donated to community and they help. Usually they help about thirty to forty organizations a year hinted at something else if you don't raceway as you say you can't just. I don't know your New Orleans style. Miss south eliminate tourism they'll have any event in September that September 9 I believe yes I think that they'll have something to raise money for cat now. Domestic violence and UN as a charity program. That's our tourism program yes help scholarship for students who want to go into the tourist and business we know you're talking tourism at this event has grown so much. It's becoming tourism destination and it really absolute. Lee I would say. Very large portion maybe not have quite close of these people out of towners what people are doing this you know. Coming in other friends from out of town come and spend this weekend with Meeks and we'll have all these fun activities they leave Sunday freed because it's such a tourism event they want people to just. Experience the city on Sunday. And Allen now and I attended last year there was actually somebody from Australia while so we aren't turning into an international. Events the federal car. That too is because of that then the hot spite what is say new it's been there for a few years now that's been so much give a check in with breast reconstruction. They do it is so we do out of we actually this is kind of exciting. But read 96 women alien assistance since inception in two when he ten while I have three in the pot well working out there on their grants. And so that's gonna put me in ninety you know 99 we're up almost of 200 women we've been able to help them press there's got to get out yeah. All right so amazing and amazing thing is has been over 300000 dollars and that is not only coming back into the community in helping people pay for those things. Added that 96 patient eighteen have been from out of state. And so you know we do and we did that usually is helping the child care. Travel assistance for people coming from that mistake you know bush is a program is in need out there for women. And it would talk to Kim a few of the view that taking a Macon is a national program and I I can't wait for that. Kids were to tomorrow's you have to give another shutout were too because they're so proud that she's been our united way she's been our. Chairman of the board she was our first female campaign chair somebody things and how. She really brings people together to get the job done to help others and it's it's. Kudos to him thank you for all you do I Taylor ladies. Almost out of time. Hi. So let's for one last closing thought. Police didn't east would you give us the web site via phone number thinking people to know again about this wonderful weakened that's coming up faster house. Okay we'll fest began as dot org that's FE ST IG. AA LS dot org. And like I said you still have time to get in the brought both days is brought challenge. And it is it's going be held by your tickets 100 dollars the luncheon this whole question house is just about a month away folks. It's June 22. Through the 24 at the JW Marriott I asked and Tammy.
