Yes it is I'm Tom Fitzmorris yet passing has a cultured person and every day we talk about food and restaurants and cooking and wine and and everything that seems to fit with any of those things. And you are invited eagerly invited by two common join us and talk about what. You've enjoyed lately restaurants you've been to. Restaurants you tried to avoid because you haven't been treated well there. And anything in between also we do recipes. We talk about wine and cocktails. I had a nine usual cocktail yesterday. After the royal street stroll on strolled. My wife and I went over to Brendan for dinner. And we sat down and it was looking over the cocktail list and they were tool cocktails that they used to have over Brennan's. That had kind of slipped off the menu. And there are not many people who are gonna remember the main ingredient for this but they're gonna be some people who will. And will be very pleased to know that this ingredient is now available again. But the drink is called and the of rap paid. A frat pay is pretty close to a snowball like a wet snow ball. The ice ground up pretty pretty good job of probably a lot thicker than. And course there than you would get a snowball really but it's kind of in that direction. And the main flavoring element was and a lick Kerr called owe him OJ. He and I think SO spelled. And it was a a little company in France and I'm excuse me in. He in Spain. That made this. And it was very popular around New Orleans it was another one of those things it was at one time made with absinthe. Now absinthe is legal again but this one had the actual owe him in it. And that's the first time we have seen that lick core. In Alitalia at least ten years because the the the little distillers that was making it. They went out of business they just the only place in the entire world that was still buying owe him. Was here in New Orleans and day and people in New Orleans where jumping up and down yell and hey how come we can't get this anymore but it was truly and really gone for quite a while. I was very surprised to see yet. And ask them first is this some you know copy of all hand or is that the real thing they said it then it's somebody who brought the the thing back again. And here it is. So ahead one of those the funny thing about it. Is you know how when you put pine oil in a bucket of water it turns cloudy. And there are other things that turned cloudy when you add water to them. This turns cloudy. And paint. Then I can't think. It's. Out of hot Pinkett that even though this thing is ice cold I mean it's saw that the whole glass is filled with crushed ice. And then they add the old hand and that probably a couple of other things so got one of those just because. I've never had one before I remember seeing it on menus and remembering that it was a a specialty of Brennan's of breakfast your breakfast of Brennan who is it was where they sold most of that. And then the other one. Is a really good shrink that I have tried to get it usually at this isn't quite so artists and the other one. It's called a absent swift sets SUYSSES. And this is this and mobile personal this absinthe which you can now get again it's those horrible look licorice sort of flavored a niece flavored thing absent this anyway. And let's see there is patty on a flavoring element a mixer. That's called. Gosh what's it hasn't almond flavor. And the name of it is it'll come to me in a minute. And anyway this is all mixed together with crushed ice and served and it's a critique good drink it's a called it. Absinthe sweet sense. Now what was the name of that green anyway if anybody remembers coming in and tell me. Or if you have anything else on your mind we have another you know for you know 45 minutes to to do it. We have a bunch of things coming in off our message stream. You can send me your text messages. To 87870. Is what that says you're talking about Brandon on delay. I didn't think. They who was there. I don't know with that he means. I hear someone who just ask how is it going it's going great thank you very much here's another when Tom. What the you know all but about it knew Warren New Orleans Russian K. Many folks have never heard of it yeah that's true it's one of those things that you used to fine. And the old time bakeries like. Dixie and a bakery in places like that. All around the city. A Russian K. I'm kind of Tony I can I don't even have a clue on that does anybody remember. Is any yellow line that it does anybody remember. A a Russian cake. A distance that ring a bell with me. Some you'll find out T that's what I loved though doing the radio show is set. Who can know everything I mean even if we had a long list of paid Els has them a Dell's well that's good. Russian K equal have to find what that is so hope that's not the same thing. As this concoction a lot of the old time Baker's used to make. By taking the leftover doughnuts in the left over cinnamon rolls and they just as the left over everything pretty much. And they would come alike squish it down. And it windy you know the jelly would flow out of this went into that when and inmates slice it up into square is. And there were a lot of people who love that I had another way and I think it was called Washington. Pastry to I'm not positive. Let's see what Austria here. Hey Tom have you ever tried may bail smoked sausage you'll never want any other after you pass it. Okay I I never heard of it and I don't know where I'd go together and have never seen that before. Let's see here's a man who says I guess it's a man I don't know I just assumed automatically might be a woman I run a meat department for a grocery store. Brisket and booed and it is expensive and cork tree stores so that I would expect it to be pretty high. Cooked and served TU. I can't say is that that is rule would consume when booed as on a plate it's usually something fairly inexpensive. The two and no one of those things in the go in the barbecue. Category. Barbecue just almost by definition is cheap as dirt. OK moving along. When asked to recount. I OK we get the meat guy hi Todd any any restaurant like Vince. Of this news that you can recommend. Well this goes was kind of a one of a kind restaurant it was on. They'll chase highway at Gretna boulevard. On the West Bank. There's a Mexican very good Mexican restaurant there are now called. On one it's it has something to do with mosquito. Cafe mosquito or something like that. Anyhow on that the news of Cisco's was an excellent seafood place. It was sort of run by the Vasco Vick family which should tell you right there on hop another family. Of Croatian people which is a sign of goodness. And they. We're really great for a long time and then they closed when none of this is my theory on that I can't prove it but this is what it always will click to meet. Is that they opened up this team. Kitchen next to the net a unit of it was actually a separate building pointedly the very lease of the set a separate part of the building. And they were doing steamed seafood. New Orleans has never. Ever responded. To steamed seafood we don't like it and restaurants that have come and gone quite a few of them. By saying boy this is that just really hot up in Maryland in New York stayed in Pennsylvania. People really go crazy over steamed seafood yep but nobody here. And that's what happened I think. Is that vesco is opened up the steam placed the steam room miss but I think they called it. And they just didn't go and then they were broke. And then one of them died 21 of the two Brothers side which was stretch. Well. Moving right along on this. I would say if you're looking for the kind of seafood the and certainly the quality. On that you were getting over it discos. You ought to go to drug goes because what do we have here we have to. Two families. Of people from Croatia. Ultimately. Come from the same whole cultural thing and this is the same seafood tradition and all of that. And try goes is really really great in discos was really really great in it today. Grew out of our. Drop those is really hard to beat I don't know if you've been there lately but they did a renovation of the building. On making it a much. They say it's it's it's no bigger than wise I find that hard to believe it looks twice the size of what it used to be. And so it's much easier yet tabled in the big problem with drug goes along times that you had to wait an hour for a table. Now laws this hardly any waited all you've most of time you just walk in and sit down their food is better than its effort and 26063. 260187. Excuse me. Call right now you'll get right in we'd love to talk with you but know what you've been eating lately and where you'd like to eat. I can I can have a message you hear from someone who makes if I can track it down. I skipped over it but not on purpose. We someone who said that my gripe about the those difficulty I had finding any kind of food at all at the no New Orleans wine and food experience. Tasting last night the stood the stroll. The U it's a royal street stroll with set according to this person who claims to be a former. Director. Of of no fee. And says that there never was any food. On royal street but I know for a fact there was I can name new names and tell you where they work. And there was definitely food there and you would sort you would get enough that you would need to go out to dinner. Not everybody had him at that when they had a lot of galleries and antique stores and we're involved with this. They had a lot more food than they had now they have now and when I saw the price issue which I don't remember. It's. It just struck me is not the greatest deal of effort and have had a few other people tell me the same thing. So. I do think that's something you ought to tickle. 2606360260187. U sour note on our telephone number call us we'd love to talk with you but anything on your mind at all. And love to hear from you even if it's you know some everyday kind of cooking thing it if you ever got the idea that this was just a group may show and we only talk about fine wines and and caviar and stuff like that that we talk about that we talk about everything else too well pour boys crackers. Candy bars you name it if it's Anibal. We talk about L mesquite grill that is the name of the place a stronger remember. Let's see this says that that other kind of sausage. Says here outside of summit Mississippi that's summit is in look call in McComb. And the reason they call it summit. Is that it's the highest point on the Illinois central railroad. Let's see when warehouse here any restaurant. Like. Part of the new apartment knew in river tunnel par avenue was gone a group on however you can go have his food he is over at the country club the chateau country club he is the chef over there. So if you like the food that you used to get over apartment do. That's where it is or shot syrup that was the stuff that you make up an absence which sets out of that could remember. Might glitzy Jon is calling us over here on the green phone. John. Yes. Money well. I want to you'd description oh rushing gate was pretty much right. Always does that when it is. Outside Portland nine blog called pots back bakery yeah and add it up throw everything away. It's not. It. It's great that some palm door some option wrote. Well it. Yeah some kind of got the data out there and it was out I think people because it was. And and I'm not only that but I heard it was dirt cheap to. As. Well a cheap and good are fine with me you know you won't have to argue that point. Yeah I guy can imagine yeah with a all the jelly and everything else. But thanks to share that right so yeah. It's a Puccio all of a sudden we hugely busy by the end and it always happens this way that's when I need to take a break well here it is. Right and being at being. Used eyelids. I praying at the primary. Here. Well there aren't they might not even be three restaurants and beat this brings its not this not much. There isn't that Camille yes cafe I like pretty well they have a it's a neighborhood style play Singapore boys state to a lot of seafood. And they were real good daily special every day and on Monday. They serve the one thing that actually survived Sauna steam table and that is red beans rice seed they do real good red beans. And they had it on both day that today. A so that's one. Then there is the the the name of it is. Looks it's coming it's coming here it is it's the the fat spoon. And one comes on highway 59 in the other wind is on causeway boulevard. Right across the street from the pop buys as the best landmark act and give. And they they have vote they do breakfast mostly but it's really good eyes it's won a one of the better breakfast places around the whole area. And I think that about does it for a beavis Linksys all the beating cafe Tuesday they do on a lunch breakfast luncheon not in it. That's a cute little place to sell. Then you're in men and then you're in Covington and it could be worse. Do you have it written that. Oh yeah. He had caught well you've got this a whole bunch restaurants in May and villain Covington both but. Close into a Peta. The one that my wife and I usually go to do a more than any other place. Is the New Orleans food and spirits it's on leave lane. That's just barely over that big bridge that goes across the Boca fly a river. By and you go into. Covington its old Covington. And you turn left on Lee lane and you go up but the block and half but you'll see it. Mostly seafood but really have a pretty good to well rounded menu really inexpensive but the quality of food they put out there we go there alive. Not many restaurants serve that at all. And 100 way to we'll limiting ourselves any part of town of the whole city. I'll say it up and around new war. But. Are up all it. Down. Gosh I know. I'm drawing a blank going on who does lobster biscuits all it is not common around here. It was the most are somewhat appear. Tell me and maybe a just got to. The Caribbean all the other Caribbean room. I'm hi I'm real pleased by them they're coming back yet that's a really really fine dining place and now. And they brought back most of the old issues. They grilled. But lobster in the part of the call yeah hole and make it appear Internet cable YouTube and and when you look it looked at a congress little. And you know it. That sounds great. You know it just occurred to me. When I most recently had that it was last night at Brennan's. They had a Cora you know lobster biscuit it was wonderful. So. Why it thank you very much so yeah. So should he should it be about a 120 two. Ossetia its talk about. Block and rely on Congo what do you think is written on it for logs. That Matt is probably why it meant but it. I'm probably so that's that would make sense perpich. I've been thought of that that's about it yeah. I say it was free for some people it if you walked in there and you'll you had been in that strike there was so streetcar conductors strike. And that's what started the ball boy sandwich going it to begin with but he. It at any should be them to Martin Brothers if you would come in there and it's a band were really down on a lot we don't have any food for family. And he would feature. And that's south our free lunch counter to me. I just thought that an act that made it's a great job he outlook on the Levy outside of the well by Allah Syria backed the enough. But. Without Martin. Any thing to do it bought on the sheet on. Jeff piling. Yeah it was the same it was same guy oh what happened was that the two more Brothers split up. One album wanted to do a big new rest on the other one wanted to stay where they had been for a million years. And does so they just went their separate ways I forget which was which by it was pull obese and what was the other one's name. Am not comment to me. But. Interesting characters in the history of New Orleans food. I allowed in a team is great. Yeah yeah. You can Pitt backed it can't be caught and now. You know I'll. And. I are still wind up in the area by 1:2 in the morning. Eating roast beef for boys but this was when I was in college and we did stupid things like that packed. I would tell you go over ago it's I know this might sounds management go to care arrest on supplies. And buy him some really really good knives or a really really good solid wood cutting board. Or or some really high quality skill it's Horry just whatever is strikes you as being something. That the is that people would do enjoy. It would be a lot better than you know the China that you get that you never use. That I would I see a problem with that though if you were to take oysters uncooked oysters. And wrap them in a tortilla. And maybe put some of the Rockefeller solace and there it sounds good so far. But when you put it in the oven. The water that comes out of those oysters is gonna turn the tortilla. Too much. And I ate it might work though I mean it's it's an interesting idea. Cassette Rockefeller. Saw us concept is he really good idea goes with a lot of things. Question rapidly you know. On oysters and festival. Someone says best chicken ever had. You're part of personal destruction Syria Edmonton won out here tried this and one on thanks. I haven't been there yet but everybody who calls me about it lumps. Mentally it was absolutely fantastic what did you. It's that would add up three and blueberry waffles. That's different take a while while the green and make a blueberry compound put on top. The way it did they did they put the breed in the in the toe in the batter. Or. A hole and then they kind of okay. And then propel it on and on top. And it's actually at that can have these homemade breakfast potatoes. Real at the Cato try to rebel Britain onions. Are. And then. Catch it on do we match. Sort potatoes and under that onion. On top and cheese so all I believe. And I think hash is way underrated. It is as Theodore yeah. How far aways is from jesuit high school. Our. Corporate. Immigrant. Yeah well better. Off now Beaulieu count on them. And I don't corner right there the other day that I think three of four restaurants that have come and gone in that location over the last was since Katrina is the store right. But what are your string. All of very well you know we're very good friends. Old Nokia. An end on the in the order that they coach that was that was but he has been on the wall. The real deal bureau. Or call eight million I'm sorry to hear decorate. It won't experience. Via but he was who was quite a guy he was as a guest on the radio show. He was the perfect radio guest because he didn't even have to ask him a question you would just point adamant he would start. And we've done all he would go as long as you let him go and then you'd stop a mini pick up where you left off. But he he could he could go on for hours in and eating right trusting way yet is so good good. But I actually got to work with and one radio phone early. In the spokesperson and not get it cemetery tour. And it really it. Earn. I think you mentioned and others to mine there's a mark Brothers and our. Witness talent. But that index rose the Asian and Michael quick check. Is this I'm under clear view right off the eyes. Theory right now. And Robert Byrd and you again. It looks like a convenience store but it's actually as much a restaurant is it is that. Right and they do do according to those people who want a bestseller. Hi I'm being forced to take a break so thanks for calling in appreciate all that will be back with more of the food show in a moment but first please you know I'm we have a TV on in here. That for the last several hours has been showing. Women's softball. Games. And I haven't seen that very much in my life but I must tell you like I find it hard to hear my eyes away from it. Here's of these these ladies playing. Baseball. It's different it's just different to. It's the food show I'm trumpets Morris we still have a little time you know lot of time. It's. Time it's our program is sponsored. By castles oops he's that asks he's itself rants and pour points know that. I did Kathy Spiezio. I have two of the book cafe Spiezio then it will be kept pace peace. That goes back on ultimately to 1857. And little is known about those early days except the people who ran it were. Among the earliest Croatian. Folks who came to our shores. For whom we're very thankful. But beyond that. It it was a restaurant for a long time his family style restaurant that closed down for a long time. I remember seeing the sign and neon sign in there and aegis never was in business really could tell. And then. A doctor. Psychiatrist to be exact. Who had tremendously good taste in terms of food and wine and everything else he bought the place and turned it into. A new risk. Called. The casa. We've who's who's who's a was distracted by now if it what you shaming yourself like this it is it's really that. On our hotel you're tired okay. Anyway. A cafe east peace. Was they they came in and they redid the rest on hold and they gave it a distinctly New Orleans look you know when I'm talking but. We have you know by the dozen restaurants around. The French Quarter mostly good and other parts of the city that just had this class. That looks make it that makes you say what this is going to be hundred years old. In this case it was and they changed everything around in the re invented most of the issues they put a lot of things on the menu. The people had eaten alive allotment they never really handed in Richmond before it just the name you one thing. They did that a Cheney with. With feel like honey peel and fettuccine. Alfredo style and it was just nobody else in town had something else that nobody else in town was doing was grilled fish. Over charcoal. The guy did doctors and telling you by. Went out in it and add a special grilled built along the lines of what bugs broiler with using. And that spread throughout restaurants throughout the city and it has been cutting interest in every sense and it's still. You can go there and start off with really among the three of four best crab cakes in the city. They have on an oyster dished it reminds me of oysters Rockefeller but really it's a totally different thing Friday oysters the sauce is different but I'd get it just but every time ago. They're turtle soup is among them very very best in the city and the menu. Entree side of the menu but comes forth with a lot of items that he'd just. Don't see too much anymore one of them is. On trial page that is loaded with just about every other kind of seafood you can think and yet it still emerges as a good track. All this is acting camp XP says they are open for dinner Wednesday Thursday Friday and Saturday and Sunday. And on Sunday during the daytime they have really really nice Sunday mention I think the weather will be perfect for that tomorrow and suspecting. Brunch over there and it kept pace BC 1011 Decatur street. It's write off of it's right in the middle of the French market is when it is. Cap faced these 26063. 260187.
