Revisits Katrina where we now did you leave did you did you come back are you ever coming back. Joining me now and -- more you -- we've been talking the last hour Doug enjoy I thought you were talking about children today. We're talking about how they're -- how your faring but primarily how they're faring and what have you noticed about a -- on the story about my kids. Since the storm. -- my son is just the -- for euros toys seeding goes to build things on -- Legos and since since the storm. Literally outlook come on Jack -- got to run tomorrow we're story gets the more god twine that wire for to weed wacker you know. And he will not walk out the house would at least four to six cars shoved in his pockets he isn't. You can never you never catch my son without a people just not and that was the biggest thing he lost so many arm practically. All of his toys in the storm and he is on a mission to score as many -- cancer or just want it's his security blanket my youngest daughter actually has a blanket. It's on it's it's don't know that's what she calls it. And -- and get rid of and all the rest of them my oldest daughter she had to go to to put by the time she was for some it was pretty much gone. No my oldest is my youngest is eight years old she still has a -- and you know what if you want them dead -- when she goes to college she can have it. End of story that's what she wants that's what she's gonna get. Because we've all been through enough and I don't think it's -- old question here for somebody to have some that just makes them feel good. My oldest is the same way so we're talking about children. And and after the storm. There was. I hate to use -- controversy but there was a controversy. The the the archdiocese of both New Orleans were some of the first schools open back up again and and there -- some. -- Some people raise the state because they thought oh they're trying to jump in and then score a bunch of stuff they want vouchers to get school money here but I don't. Don't believe in my heart that that was the case. Because the actually it was put very well my father father William main street Louis superintendent of schools and he's joining us here now and I wish you repeat that sentence because -- wanna get it wrong. You said father mainstream that we. We don't educate children to be Catholics we educate children because -- -- something like that there was such a profound statement how you doing -- borrowings -- -- thanks for joining you've been. Time thank you very much. For having me and I thank -- audience as well. No I think that's right after the some I think that what you said by way of introduction it is so important. What are the most fundamental needs of children is the development of basic trust. And there was tremendous dislocation. Mean power after Katrina. -- to populations are suppose acutely. The elderly sick. And especially for children. And parents who are. Cool relocated that went to other places understandably. The anchor. Of security. Was a school what this routine and what its order. And I think that's very important and when we opened the first schools in Orleans Parish in October of 2000 cause. Many of the children who came from public schools and -- not Catholic and so on. And I said that we cannot educate children because they're Catholic we educate children because we're -- that's when it's ones that's what we do. And we have a model that works it works for children across. Economic. Class. Rays showed gender. Areas and it was so important to open schools. Outside -- but I think that. The schools or kind of magnets. That drew back families and with families then you hit the development of the infrastructure. Finance Madison. Groceries. And all the other things that were essential you couldn't ask families. To come -- come back to the walls. Well what do you give up and running would give up and doing what we don't have anything but if you come back we'll do you know. It's the field of dreams that's the field of dreams in reverse. What we needed was the field of dreams going forward. You open them you build them. And they will com. Because she gave parents a reason. And my parents came their children came cam which came and then an infrastructure began to begin to give them to grow and develop. Well that's spend spend one of the things like he's just just the anchor but also the fact. I hate to use the term baby sitter because that's not what you do actually educating them but. But quite frankly hey my kids start back to school on Monday in my wife's gone home and I actually can go out and accomplish other stuff during the day because the kids are gone all day I mean we all know that old when Reynolds -- It in it yet take them off my hands for a few hours just so I can get stuff done. But I think that's an excellent point that you make it starts -- do. Parents. Well so many people around incredible. Pressure and incredible tension and stress. And if parents knew. That their most. Precious possessions. Most precious skipped their children. Or in the safe environment. Where they were learning they would cared for and they will love me this -- parents. To do all of the other. Essential things. Kind of job make contacts. Make arrangements. If parents have to do all that. And they worried. And under tremendous stress about -- children. That's steadily compound. Big -- and so I think your point is very very well take it. We're gonna step away for just second income banks are taking your calls are true father William main street is my guess is the former superintendent of the schools in the archdiocese of New Orleans. And we're gonna talk about we've been we're talking like kids as we commemorate. Remember. Hurricane Katrina and the devastation that it wrought on this area five years later now. And again -- with -- mainstream and with your true with your children. What are you seeing five years later. How how has the how has the archdiocese grown. Since then I mean fathers no more you know longer the superintendent of schools but how all the schools. The super quality -- -- the parochial schools doing on the Catholic schools doing around here. And how many people who. Who actually. How many people who came and took advantage of the fact that she that the the archdiocese was able to reopen schools actually kept those students there. Did did a lot of students transfer Puerto allows students say you know they stayed until literal schools were open and they should thank you know went back away imminent. Has this improved. Relationships. All across the board here after Katrina across norms and across the -- to remain on various. 26017866889087. In the toll free -- how would you spend your children -- five years after the storm. Joining us is father William main -- the former superintendent of schools in the in new New Orleans like archdiocese -- we're talking about. Five years after Katrina immediately after the storm what happened and and how and how we are not why father you know what I would -- when you actually stepped down as the superintendent of schools. I have to say I was surprised and yet I have been saying if from the word go -- partner how many hats are they gonna make you wear over there and every one of them has got a full file feathers and a so our hi how are you personally faring since don't. Thought five. But some people thought it was. Can they get hit. It's a but nobody at the I talk now on the don't want to meet -- -- had a big heads unit the the global electoral allies guy cannot be bad you have no I saw you yesterday you -- He had the perfect make up for radio yeah I had the best -- the best looking guy you'll ever hear then having looked at bullet like. No I had the opportunity to in 2008 that I had been the director of communications and also superintendent for a number of years. And I had an opportunity and I'd always been involved in teaching. To go out -- -- to be the visiting professor. And scholar in residence at the George Marshall I was -- John Marshall law law school in Atlanta. And to reconnect with my former law being. And where this -- Pepperdine. And it was a wonderful opportunity for me cause to go parents subsequently our. Written two books and have a dvd. But you all -- the background since Katrina. And so it was a it was a excellent opportunity for me and I'm. You always need I think. New blood and unique new our ideas and new approaches. And so it was it was a nice -- Remember -- and how big how big the archdiocese school district get after Katrina. Well actually. To a large extent well I think one of the most does significant developments. Is that. Right after Katrina. I -- about school. Archbishop formal. And archbishop -- They've refashion their schools. Archbishop formal. Became a transition school. In which show -- 11100. Students. From all over the metro area. I went to school as they took faith based school. And shifted -- to that evening I mean the morning I'm sorry -- 633. And I remember them because my nephew was going to jesuit he was going to lend money. That's correct and then in the evening. They started at 1230. And then -- until 630 in other people in the morning love it because what many of them get especially our seniors. And I was a very important thing. We hit the opened schools because the seniors students. And their senior year. This involved. Scholarships. College. And all of that further develop an -- life Ahmad Badawi could not allow schools. To be close and we wanted to take. All the children and we took children. Well regarded public schools diversify the schools but we're not open. And frankly and I elementary NN our secondary schools our hearts -- Many of the parents could not pay tuition. And that's that's understandable. People what people would devastated economically. And we simply took the men and we believe. All of our -- -- -- -- -- And we were able to get the support necessary. From all over the country and all over the world. So that would have thought we would have this ability can. Two to welcome these children. Into our schools and I think news was very important to our squad because. They had reached that particular point where they were going on the next phase of their development yeah and does this say. What we hit a school. Or have but what happens to these joke. And and that's and that's one of the things we talk about what joy Ostrosky last our doctors trust is is specially with the teenagers. I mean once you once you've recently in a senior -- like you know I'm dancing on becoming an adult you don't exactly have the same. Hormone -- stresses that you deal with but the fact is you've just spent years and years and years. In school and a trying to attain a certain level. -- -- -- to branch are going to college go into the workforce and then get smacked in the head by this so. All the way across the board everybody has a different level of stuff to deal with. And and and frankly. I don't know I'll tell you the truth that made me forget about what it was like to be a teenager because there's so many other things in my mind it's certainly I forgot about what it was like the big kick as and so many other things on my mind. But the problem is that what they had no options they have to rely on pause to beat their anchors and wheat and then. We didn't have the anchors. You know what I think that's -- magnificent -- that you guys are really do because. It felt that he -- belts. To be that kind of barometer. Or gyroscope. Why it was so easily. To become unglued. We needed those -- voices. And study lives. Provide that kind of security. And a kind of strength. Two young people. Because. It was so -- To become. -- very very depressed. Very very dislocated. Very very disoriented. And because it was it was enormous. When one when you look at that. -- it it was it was enormous. There was Armenia and the same thing happening especially move closer on the Gulf Coast because of the store and number frankly that it yeah. I'll tell you the truth my kids don't realize that from my wife and I leaned on them as much as there is as they leaned on us because. To me. Forced boss. Should not go -- They you know my children basically. Every time -- look at them go what's gonna happen to them -- flip out. You know -- so I mean there are bad bad bad they did that they did that for me and didn't even know. I'm Melissa well the new lowered -- -- it's like the Bible says you know. -- child shall lead them and I think that many people did just what you did. They that I can't afford. You are to -- right now. A possible. Now. Lot of people looked at themselves and saw some saw some things that they didn't know or and there are some good some thread but that's one that's one of the things that stormed is made been made everybody look at themselves. Are looking at the clock coming at a subway into the newsroom we got -- start taking calls her father William made history as my guest. He is the former superintendent of schools we're talking about children five years after the storm how are your children coping. Howard how are they getting along you seeing any signs. Just. Or toll free on my guest does a father William mainstream by the way next weekend. The weekend. Labor Day. You're missing me onstage would Becky Alan and Randy Germany and in the saints comedy -- Datsyuk -- it's a black can go comedy about the history of the saints from the beginning at. Detainees will be out there Budweiser will be out there at the top cats is playing on their -- one night is a big old. Manny I guess is worth the -- -- the whole weekend want to come celebrate Labor Day over there by Latham and about the sites. Again taught -- -- you may -- my guess I got a -- call let's go who's been named Corky and New Orleans take Corky Europe on WWL -- through their missed Mike. I don't court thanks for -- -- -- I'm doing well how are you not bad sir thanks for calling what's thing how how we all fair and after after Katrina five years later. And while we're doing fine. Nor don't find this just this morning had a fabulous. Presentation which -- -- truth. First Lady Laura Bush spare income all of us. -- -- her first letting them know that those -- up this morning at 830 this. There have been a wonderful presentation. Doors for OJ with these -- brought to our schools. Are ought to be commended. Com my my question total other mainstream I -- -- kind closures all. It is the why -- -- in high school who really didn't reopen in the parish Saint Bernard. And at my concern observation in hindsight is that the -- and they lack of reopening in saint Bernard parish. Committed -- bringing back cool. 500 -- some of the strongest. Families Christian families in the parish. But they're not believe relocated over totally ignore short strokes. I'll which was just wondering what is the real explanation now believe automate tree was. Insure millions in debt nation and thinking process and -- just not not heard an explanation and interest should be able to -- -- perspective that. Ninth while the causes some of the class. Short I think that's a very excellent question Corky and there are one that's been asked numerous times. The archbishop and it's. What -- the in that particular area Saint Bernard bush totally devastated. And it was simply. Not economically able to be revealed. What we did was we get a -- the demographics studies. Where they hand and family had relocated. And we found out demographically. -- take it relocated on the North Shore. Towards the western part of saint Tammany parish. From a little bit east of Pope John Paul the second school. To the west mainly toward Hamilton. And so therefore what we decided. It that the family had relocated they -- and it was not feasible. To reopen haven't. Therefore we decided to -- to propagate. We initially. All elicited -- -- that happens what we get the temporary school they have. So that's cool would -- Israel for the young men and our young ladies who were attending Hammond. To continue -- I'd be happy. Wildcats who was being rebuilt. In the western part. -- saint Tammany parish. And once again it was a question of economics yeah it was. It was financial considerations there's no question about it but it was also the idea. That's that's where families -- relocated. Relocated to a point where they have purchased homes I mean I would never -- their talking about. One of the reasons is you open the schools was to bring people back through this area and I guess co workers wonder why people were brought back to. Saint -- specifically. Because well you know because I mean but all the people who are relocated portion of those saint -- did they indicate to you that they really had no desire to make the same but aren't a war. That's correct statement purchased homes known they had made the lives there are five and also it ought to be mentioned. That's. We did reopened. To the warning Catholic grammar school that was able to reopen. And it was reopened. And late October and November of also are bad particularly here already upon -- Down and thank -- Norton. And that particular school opens and it's grown and it's flourished. And so I think that's. It was a question of demographics. It was a question question of people. Permanently relocating. To that particular corridor. And so what we wanted to do was to provide that kind of continuation. In which we SSA keen to -- Saint Joseph happy. Took place a temporary school on their -- -- don't -- so that school could continue. And then we moved to that particular. Area. And I am an employer get a better understanding that in fact that that's the dynamics that went into it and that's the full explanation. Where you could move that you couldn't move the you couldn't move the grammar school to saint Joseph's -- because they have the good bread but they also make culpability in bonus Gary that's -- -- all -- scared public. Are different -- just say if America. Blacks land heads I haven't just you don't let a little bit yeah I -- a -- hope nominee -- solution I don't know where you're coming back. From his blood -- brigades that they don't go live. I presume. Who have -- While -- all of the -- world we'll get him in the sector right here Tommy and -- my guests here about banks are more cool in director restaurants -- wonderful food you -- enforce those were your broadcast over here but -- -- we say -- -- -- the the orange -- and New Orleans archdiocese is his farming everything's. Don't pretty well I mean you know. I've done a bunch shows that that and chief publisher Greg bring them. The archbishop Vincent completely up pleased with -- still. Everything's rock and roll in the archdiocese is doing fun cracked. Well I think that they'll be our side because continued to our move forward. Especially the NB. Recovery he has and then recovery is really aren't going nothing I think we've come a long ways that we have I was -- to run. And I think it's really testimony. Two. People both Catholic and non Catholic. People -- face yeah who have contributed really took a common good of this city because. I I I just really didn't know what -- wanna say that that's. Right after Katrina there was face serious discussion. Which is very troubling. In the country. The idea that no more resources. -- monies would be committed to your wallet that this was so devastated area you know and we should just let it go. And you met -- Not only the state of Louisiana. But also the nation. What and the world privilege given how without the warlords. What it's tremendous. Cultural. And historical heritage. What what they are short sided feud that's why it's an important -- -- in public life. I -- they were in responsible positions I don't know that they were responsible. But they -- voicing this kind of view. And out what are tragedy that would have been for our city. And and and really for our country -- An audit that no doubt about that followed the sad part about it is there were -- and committing no resource is yet still taking from us the resources that we encourage everybody else. On the other lobby most and I don't that's fine if you don't wanna give us any thing and helpless. That's fine but now leave us to our own devices and leave us are the stuff that we create will take care breast cells and they weren't willing to do that you know the very good points. Father I thank you for joining me sir it's always it's been a pleasure to talk Julien was really nice to see a channel for their yes. Thank you I I enjoyed seeing you and god thank you for having me and I think -- audiences wells. Thank god bless thank you sir thank you okay joining me now here in the and then. In the Marriott hotel is because I'm Cindy relating my stories about Katrina my stories were. Primarily a with a headset on my head -- -- drove through waters to get out of here to myself but then drove a -- -- and broadcast every day and then drove back and forth. But me personally my family was out. Who when the storm hit my family was gone so that I could do this I did not have to evacuate my family I just had to drive my truck through about three of has -- -- law that was the worst thing I did but you ladies. Tommy and -- Tommy young west. Julia husband yards were employed. A fellow named Brian compassionate or he. He he he's he's an Angel but Joe looked absolutely my journey began with this whole -- of everything in the can see what was it 2005 when I came as a southwest housing as a temporary receptionist and and Catholic it's up to me and a permanent basis within two weeks okay -- work there I love -- my favorite double file time. And when Katrina and Rita hit. I have firsthand experience of people calling by the hunted some and just filling up this was born and sometimes twenty and thirty individuals and one small motel room. Children screaming and crying and asking for help. And about the faith without works for two individuals. That. K Eric and they. Between. Dallas Fort Worth Arlington Houston San Antonio know. He must have house that was 3000. -- as financially and then provided the necessary means they are primarily elderly. And then all kinds of -- failures cannot nobody till like Friday night to cooking utensils the whole day you ever run across some and I got an -- before you -- -- Nail and you know when he didn't wait on -- month. Yeah -- don't even when he took the initiative. That is to make sure that these people have power for housing heat heat so arranged for buses to go to the convention center and to the astrodome. We had employees to take their husbands and their children and took those facilities and they became ill because this this situation was solid service. And sides have never seen nothing like it. But you know now have the opportunity. To say thanks order really. That is that what's going on nobody edited them area -- -- live definitely giant had gone and it's been five B is not have to -- thank you have the thanked. Houston Texas and also brand names and -- mr. initially at when I evacuated from mom who runs it was on the to lose him. I had -- answering him out ladies I was up for habitation September 7 man. -- Wrapped in Houston phone that there is the upset of September and then they came to national thought I was not land a thoughtful response that -- I'm rescue 'cause my sister was there but Myanmar mom moved and that. -- -- -- However while he was able to let you know and the intended to -- -- -- have a baby to sleep Ben Bernanke provided they get their chance and I didn't realize you know what I'm because I was never in a situation like that they. I don't think I don't count my blessings every day goes that I. But the fact is a lot of people could just just just enough little bit privacy that you don't have to go through. Wake up for the moment look okay feel strange things that aren't actually had the war shall meet kind of up all the pants because I would like upset. Finally was very very baby at the was we -- bottled water. And someone has actually Pauline did it every -- that I could not do it myself. I had no spend an ability at I mean when my cats but astrodome -- starred in its cash stomach that's our lives on the someone actually opened up and come don't wash me baby to me. Sort of background in the come Holden what a faithful who. From there went too -- of them actually into apparent clusters of the house to explore people he can't bring beer or.
