And now we go live to say it's -- the -- post practice news conference his Colston with a right shoulder. Did not practice safety Roman Harper. Right ankle did not practice. Wide receiver Lance Moore with his groin was limited. In defense -- tackle Tom Johnson with his left calf was limited. We signed wide receiver -- is Billings to the practice squad. In place of QB Sean Canfield. We're kind of back on our normal schedule with today being in our our base. Installation first and second down. But we had a good practice. Gotta get into a normal week routine now with tomorrow being more of a nickel emphasis and questions. After watching what Chicago's -- do -- one year division rivals and defending you know. Division champs I mean how much of the challenges that. Come and well. That this is a team that you know it's it's easy to forget it's not easy to forget really. That played in the NFC championship game a year ago in Chicago. The last two thirds of the season they played. Extremely good football complementary football. Both offensively and defensively in the kicking game but. The film against Atlanta was. Was it was definitely. A good indication of the type of team we're playing you saw them. Really do a good job on defense. -- turn -- pressuring the quarterback. And that's a real good offense they played. -- offensively they capitalized on that field position. Came up some big plays themselves. So you know when you watch it not only on offense and defense but you watch in the kicking game. Lovie and his staff and in in that team. Have a formula and it's been very good to them when you look at their history and in so. They played to it on Sunday union you can see that on tape. Look at the defensive line and five sacks -- of the tackles and play it would indeed it was a basically their -- game. Well couple things you know when there's a point next game He became one dimensional. And once that happened. You know all of a sudden and then that the pressure heats up and it becomes. Easier for the defense of lined it to rush the passer but. They played with great effort and energy Peppers -- done a great job the rest those guys up front are very active it's it's -- it's a real good front defensively. You know it's an experienced defense when you when you look at the returners coming back -- -- last year's team so. They know and in a very well coached in their scheme and they they know what they're looking to do with each defense of alignment that they call. They do a great job keeping the ball in front of them and they've. You know historically since -- has been there there probably second or third. Highest in the league with takeaways by the defense so I'm at -- they do a great job of obviously emphasize and and it shows up on film. You listen Saints coach Sean Payton here on saint radio WW OO am FM and dot com. Yeah I mean you know it. A lot of those games but you know after awhile they Begin to run together there's three of them and maybe not so much the NFC championship game -- the other two. You know again when you play good team in and and you're playing me there on the -- home. There still some key elements to. What wins and loses and we've got to do a better job of protecting the football. When we played them this time and then we have in years past. Again it seems like such a long time ago and in. And yet some of those same things we just talked about that happen in in the Atlanta game Sunday. Were things that that happened just when we played there so. We know it's big challenge force in. You know that the folk focus for losses is put together three good days of practices this week get as much tape work as we can in on the opponent and an understanding. The strength of this team or plan. -- It. Certainly you guys haven't beaten them there the effectiveness. Well I I think you're always. Kind of mindful of of your play -- balance defensively I mean there's times where you're -- you're open to get pressure you're not. Necessarily blitz and obviously when you elect to pressure blitz. You're hoping to speed up the clock and in the quarterback's head in and change the timing. But but that's an important element to each week's game and certainly an important element. In this week's game and you have that advantage of playing at home where the crowd noise. Gives you a slight edge in regards to the snap. Mum. But I I think that's that's going to be an important. Indicator in this game. As it pertains to both teams. Good. -- the second half a world where there's a noticeable things. You guys adjusted here did better get back. You know I thought number one at -- we tackled better in the second half and in. And obviously the third down numbers were better. Those would be the two things that you see. But but this is that this is a different type team we're playing. And you know and quickly. We jump into we had an actor workday yesterday -- the day before yesterday excuse me on Monday. And we should have plenty of time -- to see the tape and and look at. Last year's film. Obviously the pre season but the Atlanta game in. In and you know pay close attention to not only the scheme but the players that are that are in the scheme for Chicago. Well he's an -- returner. That's a problem you know both as a kick returner a punt returner you know we've heard this before. He service before as a receiver get behind coverage. In a game up there I think in overtime He. You know he's dynamic with the ball in his hands I think he's gotten better each year as a receiver. You know He can He can be involved in. A little wildcat where the ball's in his hands usually a reverse. Quick screens. I am so his speed is is is something that's noticeable when you watch the tape and and I think clearly you have to have an idea of where 23 years. At all times offensively it's it's easier to know where he's going to be on kickoff return or punt return. And in with that being said you've got to have a plan. In regards to what you wanna do with him as a returner. -- -- the Saints coach on being here on WW well enough haven't dot com. I kind of I kind of think it was. Pretty much what we thought you're seeing some teams you know make those decisions you know I mentioned to someone the other day you know how long balls in the air and it has a lot to do with the decision to come out. You know and so the kick it's not. As tire or with the same hang time. You know can can be brought out with momentum at the three it's the kicks that you know are back -- you up five deep. That seemed to be in the air longer where you're seeing you know people down. I think. You know in talking with -- about it and and Greg. And we talked about a lot is it is let's pay attention to hang time -- pay attention to how quickly this thing it's in your hands. As it pertains to the the ball flight and you know if it's if it's in that three yard area where you feel like your catch and moving forward as opposed to backing up back in open and then. Where it takes a half second even after you field it. So there's pretty smart player and and he's got good instincts and so. Between him and then and in the blocking back the two of them can. Can make the right decision they're never wrong for for down and it. And in -- being at the morning and yet we still got to be prepared because we know at some point the lob kicks common. That is going to be fielded at the five or the eight. And and you are you know cover and in return and it and so I think that's just a matter of time before you start seeing some of that we saw some this weekend. The news last week about -- is injury. That timetable it's kind of out there and how much does that change what you do that's different receivers and missing Lance Moore obviously if -- -- that. How challenging is that would. I think this I think really if it's you know it's the next guy up there and in that affects Devery it affects Robert. Last week Adrian Arrington was up and lance was working today in and looked pretty good so. Here it's happened before with Marcus it's happened before with several the other receivers in. You know fortunately we've got a group of guys that that no more than one position they understand. That the scheme they've been in it long enough so. Here we feel pretty good about you know being able to. Fill in the next player and in the meantime you know continuing continues the rehab on Marcus and and get him up to speed as soon as He can. As a younger. Quarterback positions like Q for all. Physically and mentally do you look sharp. He looked sharp the other day and you know when when when you have the defense that's playing as well. As they played. You know I think you Begin to understand that there are a lot of things that can help you in that. And in that in your performances a quarterback in. You know I think forte is given him that some of that balance they're looking for. He's got -- extremely live arm He can throw. Pretty much all the throws that you look for. And and it was good start for him. Now He hasn't he's. He's outstanding and He does some things in in their coverage. That are challenging when we all talk about conventional Tampa two defense. He's someone that can run the middle and still play in front and and downhill on on passes underneath so. They do a great job of get the ball they're very well coached in in their philosophy in in their scheme. And and they do a good job of getting the ball removed from the ball players of the receivers so we've got to be real smart we've got to understand when the downs overs well. You listen to coach on me here on a B well enough to. Well you saw the other day you know in big play off of look like a screen in and He someone's got very good hands I think he's very comfortable in the passing game. And you concede that and in and is it true runners someone who's got good vision so. He's better real good football player for them and in and I think you're starting to see him do a lot more than just. Play the running back position if you will mis les. He's a guy that is a lot of skills then you've got to be alert for him as a runner -- as a receiver. Absolute. Absolutely. Well He was actually at the local workout you know be in these from Tulane and so you know clearly was a player. That we're from -- from earlier and and you know he's he's listened he's got a great start his career and is playing very well. Yeah. When in your preparation for a guy is as active in -- You prepared that He will and it. Four. Yeah I mean I think that's that's that's the approach we would take and in. Then -- you prepare for that scheme in and you know -- you know he's the captain of that defense and and you prepare accordingly. -- That and I think I think we will. I think you'll see his snap count. Go up he's someone that it. Knows all the different positions certainly he's he's starts is an -- for roster or that's that's kind of where He initially lines but He can play in the -- complacency position. And I and I. What we've got a lot of confidence in his ability. Whether he's playing an outsider playing in the slot he's very intelligent and he's a big target in in he's been here and knows exactly what we're doing so the timing. And in the confidence level in him is is very high. Coach that. Performance by Darren Sproles and create very very good performance -- a bit of that as well as what your expectations. Are for him for this. Well I think week to week in you know he's a player that you try to get the ball to in space. He's he's a player that you know -- Obviously he's gonna have punt returns and kick return opportunities. He's a guy we're comfortable and in the ball to thrown the ball to. And you just try to mix the personnel groupings where he's in on the on the field sometimes season. You know with with another running back other times -- -- -- though as the featured H. And and keep looking for ways to do that you know he's he's very smart He makes good decisions in space. And you know he's got a great burst in and you sought in. In Thursday's game last week so. You know it's up to -- -- each week find ways but the ball in his hands in. In in. Similar there and in in a similar way that we've done before with with Reggie Bush you know and and so that role for him. It is it is in pony it's in regular and nickel you know there's a lot of different opportunities for us to get him on the field and and get him involved. -- Yeah I Wear it we did the problem is it was going to be hard to -- because the clock was going in and so really the one play He played was the next play the pass interference. And now that moment which no one knew the significance of you know other than you know we knew that the plate where He had a reception. You know it was a shoulder and so. You know drew got the formation orchestrated and we got a playoff. And then of course after that we were in -- goal line sets so I don't think that. I don't think that with the time in where was we were getting ready to -- form. Is much is get the next play communicated in here we go. Oh -- That yeah well it it it's it's look. We're not going to in other words in that situation that we're not gonna we're we're we have to get a playoff here. We have to get played at the end zone and He just becomes obviously in our primary receiver in that situation. With the third and racial or anything -- Who from a few. No we've not. We've got contacted any receivers. And and I'm familiar with TJ Houshmandzadeh that's why Aston and I'm familiar with Randy Moss. And we come we've not reached out. To any receivers. We're in a position I think where -- we were deep enough and we feel real good about the guys we have in and good. We don't know Marcus. I expect listen I think I think. Lance had a good were good they were today so we're we're we're really talking about the potential of lance coming back and and losing -- -- You -- Saints coach Sean Payton here on WWL fracture and in. With -- put in was it was a small plate stabilized. He's out of slowing and everything now and you know now it's just soft tissue flexibility. The timeline on it when we announced it is four weeks in and I believe that that timeline is it is. Acts is very realistic. And in so. He's feeling good it's just a matter of get the stitches out and in Latin the bone -- But the type of fracture He had it was one in which was fairly clean in and was able to be yeah. Repaired. Pretty -- More if well. I don't know there's a run off with an injured player. And so he's got to stay on yet another words what was the time it at that point. 31 after Colston reception. Yes so. Hypothetically stays down it's 21. In and we've got another player and and but but I think our thought process -- or what was going through our minds -- myself Drew Brees was next play. Get a line and that the challenge sometimes with the clocks move in. Is is not in the field with your two minute offense but what happens when you get. Inside. Fifteen yard line your your your list of two minute plays. Is greatly reduced to a couple in so. You know we tried to do is is really give Jim Ingraham. A jump ball opportunity to right and then there and released and drew had him kind of on a little angle. And any kind of escaped when -- scrambled in the pocket. So is it was it was head's up I don't know that I don't know that right at the top form minds we were -- we can't take an injury. Here I think the feeling was hey let's get through this next play. And and and the clock you know why have a chance to get it to the end zone. -- -- I think He was the next day we played Thursday that it would have been done on Friday I can confirm that with you but I am fairly sure it was Friday. Because and every team to the next man up and gives you the -- CNN is this team -- that production doesn't seem devolved. -- -- -- I know that I can talk about. One. Well I I think this I think we we have a group of receivers that. Have been really in this system for awhile so they've got a lot of experience. Periodically. Each and every one of them at some point maybe has missed time because of injury. They're knowledge of the system their understanding. Of their quarterback and in the type offense we run. You know it's it's not that. Necessarily a passing game we go insane -- is certain if certain reads that make it may be one in progression or two to three but. The point I'm making is it it's not an offense in which you know we know going in that one receivers gonna get eight to ten catches in this game you know we -- We may think that might happen but. So there's some position flexibility with the position group and it's it's credit to those players that they you know that they. Study closely and they understand the whole scheme and so. A guy like Adrian iron to incomes up to play acts a guy like Lance Moore is played next DeVries played over there and and so we've got. Flexibility and we've got experience and we've got depth then in I think that's probably a big part of it. As opposed to lose in a player may be in a position group where you don't have that experience. Or you don't have that depth. Thanks to make up. The only radio station that listens to you. -- news talk and sports leaders they'll be 8871053. WWL. And WWL. Dot com where. Back on but -- him to third a coach on -- press conference Kristian -- is out there at saints' facility right now mate Christian -- -- -- but I don't that's got this get a read our recap on the yeah on the injury report that were brought up there we don't know about markets that we old. Knew what was happening and his his report about -- the surgery is good he's out of a brace now just got to go get the stitches in the bone feeling good when -- it's a -- Yeah recap and notes take what receiver Lance Moore who missed the Green Bay game with a groin injury He was limited today at practice and coach Peyton. So He looked pretty good at practice thrown around but He again He was limited in its safety Roman Harper did not practice. He has an ankle and drew were unsure on whether that was suffered. Obviously -- probably was suffered during the the Green Bay game so loses three. Big headliner that you mentioned earlier with Marques Colston fracturing. His shoulder He had surgery last weekend in that timetable for him as. -- around four weeks of that -- give opportunities to guys like Adrian -- has been -- roster for a couple years now and has been buried on the depth chart because the saint of state of relatively. Healthy at the wide receiver position and now a traitor it should get his opportunity in. -- on that -- that here because Saints quarterback Drew Brees is coming to the podium at willow to analysts say -- like to reach here on the BWL am FM and dot com. Yeah. Yeah I mean He sees he's a big part of what we do. I feel like. What we've been really good that here over the last you know going on six years now is. When a guy does go down there there's there's other guys that that step open and fill that -- in and pick up the slack him and and usually you know do great jobs so. You know I feel like. You know Adrian Arrington Robert Meachem Devery Henderson Lance Moore all those guys will we'll do a great job. Took to -- that. Pittsburgh -- this. Toughness those and He he's he's a quiet -- you know. In and also very tough guy. You know that whole -- recorder as I know because. You know they they run a lot they work hard. And and yet you know they never never complained they just go about their business and you know I figured -- was wrong I was to win you know these these these things in his shoulder and and kind of holding holding it. In a weird position these kind of felt like if He was doing that is that something was probably off. And you know for him to just obviously stand. -- and his team needed him you know for those last two place you know obviously says a lot about him as a player and his toughness. -- -- got when you lose guys Michael -- Doubtful but you all. You don't realize one guy yeah. Yeah yeah I think everybody knows that. You know everybody understands that. We're gonna spread around we're -- try to create matchups and opportunities for everybody and we understand that hey there's going to be times where a guy goes down two guys go down and you've got. Other guys that they have to pick up the slack -- -- gives young guys some opportunities to come and get some playing time maybe. Haven't got a lot of playing to that point so I think everybody I think that we take pride in that. As an offense. And certainly you know defensively when you're trying to figure out you were -- the ball's going. You look at all the guys we have in the way that we spread it around and I think we we keep people on their toes but don't. Play well. -- sure -- even if you lose you know you lose a guy -- a series or a certain number of plays you know you always have. You know the back of planner you always have a plan for you know. Where -- can go or how you can just improvise a little bit you know run the same play it was just a different. Personnel group maybe. And yet it all works because you know we got smart guys that. -- no there know their role and also can feel and elsewhere. -- You know someone on the offense player on the team you're playing against last year but -- played for the Bears forever seems like yeah. And you're going to go up against a team that. Rushed Matt Ryan and Falcons for media. Pretty get last week how much do you rely on him being at each center yet He knows He knows the personnel that well right. -- Yeah absolutely does. Haven't been in Chicago for you know thirteen years or whatever was you know and yeah I think. That the challenges you know even if you know where their goal that are. How they placed gonna block them. You know and so. These guys these guys are impressive you know their defensive scheme. Albeit didn't know maybe. You know considered simple abide by the standards these days. And yet you know the results are. Of the same and that is and they they do they do a great job of rallying the ball tackling. You know getting creating turnovers forcing you know third and long situations you know making you be becoming impatient. You know stop and you know do good job stuff in the road system. You know seven may -- fraud. And you know I just think there their philosophy is one that you know they're well coached they're well disciplined. They got a lot of guys have been in this system now for awhile so they just they just do -- -- to a better than everybody else. -- -- Oh yeah see. Them. Well. -- sports that I have a day job. That I have to be at. Himself. How obviously. Make it over there is as much as I can because I am a fan of the food I'm a fan of Jimmie -- as well as being part owner so. Excited about bringing the franchise to New Orleans. And a lot of people are excited about it. A -- about it a few times in and usually do it in a really great. Fan response just you know people that that experience with it in the midwest or in other places around the country and there's a Jimmie does open up the Baton Rouge about two years ago. It's another LSU. Yeah LSU student slowed. And they have to source -- now so we've we've brought it to a New Orleans and you know hopefully we'll continue to to grow the franchise throughout the city in. And in the -- but the first store opened today so we're excited about that I think the coaches are going to be getting it tonight as well as the quarterbacks -- will be nearly two. But. That. We look at the box score five sacks -- you -- front of the film how much totally -- that Brian Dawkins or what era and recently you've seen. -- You know obviously playing in Chicago is tough place to play. You know they just you know that's what day that that's scheme. Prides itself on. Getting after the quarterback with a four man rush -- got to have obviously some talented rushers. And you know Peppers and went on injured players -- two guys on the instant that you really good job rushing the passer. The two guys inside. Or just you know big physical guys play great technique and knew when they do bring pressure you know they they they do a good job with -- there and Nichols are good pass rusher there. Their linebackers are you big strong guys that. You can get physical with back so they just they thrive in that system on. -- get nephew in the Foreman rushed causing you'd have to. You know force the ball into places that you don't want to be cares or sooner than you want to just because. The shelves zone that they play. And you know that is the kind of hope that you get impatient -- the -- to force one in there and and that's gonna make you pay. It was a Saints quarterback Drew Brees here on WW LA -- that -- These. You know players that. And today. Yes you are are part of it. Thought no. I'm I'm. Among familiar with with what's gonna happen today I haven't had a chance to -- checking emails are -- thing. I know. It. -- Yes. It. It. Yes. It's it's. Yeah well. You know I'm not sure what with this particular lawsuits about but like I can say you know obviously over the over the last I'd say four or five years especially. You know I think there's been a lot of displeasure from -- players about. Certain issues I think the the most consistent ones being. You know the disability. In the situation. Benefits. As Willis retired players pensions. And I I feel like we we get our absolute best to permeate a lot of those issues with the the CBA that was just signed. You know within that CBA was revamping of of the disability system. Any increase in a lot of the benefits the guys will receive for for disability. And also an increase in intentions. For pre 93 players so. I think there -- a lot of improvements made every time we get together is as players' association. We're constantly talking about ways to improve benefits for retired players because they you know -- absolutely deserved it and so. We do our best to do that all the time. I'm sure you and everything this opponent lightly but -- -- open -- -- a little bit so. Tend to be. -- it is and that way they came out of the -- against. Yeah took the time of the Bears story curious where He. Yeah. I think I think obviously a lot of the focus. -- probably again in our. In our conference. And in their division is Packers. And so. You know let's not forget though that they're the ones who hosted the Packers and AFC championship game so. And they bend. Into NFC championship games won Super Bowl here with in the last five years. So they know what they're doing. They know they have. Recipe in the blueprint for your success and how to win games. And you know we've had the fat -- misfortune of -- them three times previously all in Chicago and obviously those of -- haven't -- very well for us. So. You know we know the challenge that's ahead of us here and -- work work work we're happy that is our home opener we've we've you know we're coming back to the -- We obviously needed to be a crazy atmosphere because. We need every advantage we can get taken on these -- You factor. Oh yeah definitely. It definitely. Well. I know this I haven't beat these guys. So. But played in there and every time so all four times have been in. Chicago's three with the Saints and one with Chargers. So. Obviously I wish I got to figure something out huge hit it. It is. Go he's. Partly. Would you like to you're going to be Carl when your mind of what we don't have. And usually you see. But I mean -- there there in. In my agent and and -- are in ongoing discussions. You know for me I'm trying to to compartmentalize it as best I can't. You know obviously I'm involved to an extent. But you know I've got I've got. Other very important thinks to think about you know each week as I prepare for the upcoming opponent so. That's why are my agent you know and and so they all have a job to do. -- I'm hoping that it that it will be done sooner than later. But for me really it's it's about. You know focusing on winning games and trying to not have it be a distraction as much as possible. I mean. He's obviously back in one of the best. You know inside linebackers in this league for a long time. He's great with that system in that scheme. You know obviously he's a big physical presence. You can tell he's just got command of the defense and make all the calls from guys. Perspective means he's a playmaker he's always around the ball -- You know creating fumbles getting fumbles interceptions tipped balls I mean. You've seen him be responsible for a lot of big plays that happened for them on defense he's a big hitter. You know system big ranging guy's got great instincts. And yet you know forgot that be your teams well so that he's he's. You -- and Horry is understand his range. You know inside especially things that past. Populist the Saints coach that she's Saints quarterback Drew Brees here on WWL and -- dot com. Where. That. But. It can't Urlacher. Sure sure these guys you know we backed up. Yeah you never never count guys. And it's sounds like there is a family emergency. That and so. Okay so I'm not. An -- that is in my mom passed away during. In training camp. Before the 09 season and so just that -- sudden event. And that feels like. Also know that you know after you after you are able to grieve and and you know wish your family. You. You you also look forward to getting back with the guys in the locker room because they're your family to him. In a lot of ways are the ones that they get you through it too and so the faster you back on the field -- you with those guys you also feel like you know you're representing. In your loved one. In this case is mom. -- -- Maybe just that division's tough for her. You know they're there they're two different styles of defense. They both have. You know some some pretty elite pass rushers. Their ability get after the quarterback. -- sacks turnovers. I'd say that part of the philosophy is the same structure is so different. You know. But. In a lot of ways I mean. If you just talk about -- defense in general defense is what what were you trying to accomplish. As a defense where you wanna be -- how well. If we get pressure quarterback and we get turnovers were going to be pretty good. And both those defenses do that and therefore that's one reason -- both of them are are. He read defenses in this league. -- Yeah I think I think we continue to build on that you know He He. He's. Very versatile. Can do so many things. Obviously not to mention special teams stuff through him and but offensively. In his ability to grow up you run the ball from a from a two back set. Single back set split him out motion amount. You know routes out of backfield screens and you name it He can do everything and he's got a great feel for it to. He's just a ballplayer you know I mean you you can't have enough for those types of guys on your team. Discusses that love football and just have great instincts and are good guys. From what. Jay Cutler. You laughter. Had a good game against. We. Just read what you comment what it's that. Quarterback that is just that is that is that your quarterback today. Guys. Were. What does that mean. Well yeah I think I think one thing. One thing He He does pretty well is you know He seems like -- guy who can you know overcoming adversity and and just. You know put put put a lot of the distractions you know aside and and just play football you know obviously I know that Chicago media market can be tough. But and he's always been a guy that you know is able to do that I think he's he's he's extremely talented throw on the football. You know he's got obviously. A really strong arm and you can -- he's pretty fearless you know on the way that He. He throws around him and and fits in in areas that you know most guys would be able to do so. You know I know his his -- been kind of interest -- -- -- starts off in Denver makes a Pro Bowl and then. You know the whole the whole you know asking a trade situation -- -- ends up in Chicago. And you know maybe his first year there wasn't what you know He hoped for. But then you know last year they make the AFC championship and he's He started off strong this year so. -- he's a guy who's who's very talented he's got. Got some weapons around him. Offensively he's got a great defense. So they have all the makings for a great team I think you know He understands that He understands his role on the team.
