Around. Started out first we were able to. Trade with the Jets Chris Ivory. And Ana Mickey. Probably for the better part of the last couple weeks has been. Working that with. People in new York and it it came to fruition. After. Our first pick in the third round so we took. Toronto Armstead tackle out of Pine Bluff, Arkansas Pine Bluff. We had a clump of players there. And another player that. We had discussed. Really with that same pick. The defensive tackle from Georgia. So. After we'd made the first selection. We were back on the phone with the Jets. That really had taken place a few times today even prior to the draft conversations about compensation. If we -- or it is you know if we would be able to work a trade out. We were able to do that. After the first third round pick number 75. Then we were able to take basically our fourth. In the fourth we acquired. For Chris and then moved back into the third round. And take John Jenkins. So a lot of that happen pretty quickly with just five minutes. You know I I had a chance to. To speak with Chris shortly era -- shortly after actually he was in here. Probably four days ago two to sign his tender contract. And you know begun working out with our team. You know we feel like. You know he's someone that is very good running back in so we were going to be you know. Pretty diligent in regards to what we'd be willing to to make a trade with. He's been. Someone that you know I value. And I think that is the four was something that I think -- both sides felt pretty fair about so. Two great opportunity for him and always excited about it and I'm excited for him. In the meantime. We were able to acquire two players in that round and offensive tackle. That is. Real athletic. A guy that. Really. Played well at his level of competition. He has some we we had a lot of research on with the post season the east west game. And then now with John Jenkins and other players you know -- the amount of players Georgia had this year. All of our scouts and coaches were in there for you know a number of work -- So. You know that that really kind of summed up you know the last hour and a half really for us the first pick. Be in the offensive tackle and then the trade that took place after that pick. And then. Probably there was you know less than a minute on the clock when that trade got finalized. With Miami. I know that you know Miami was prepared if they had to make a pick because -- there's a lot of moving parts that are you know there's the team's calling into the league. To get the ivory trade done and then very quickly. One set trades finished. Miami in the Saints you know orchestrate the trade. Back into the third round so any questions. All reports. And and you. And decide that you wanted to take it to you knew you wanted Jason. There's been a -- start and well this goes back a few weeks but not until today. I know -- had spoken to them a number of times. And I think both teams we're gonna kind of wait as we got to be even you know. Possibly tomorrow. You had there for us not in a player that we didn't want to move. Back into the third round for the this trade could very well. Taking place tomorrow so I think it was expedited little bit Mike with. Are are need or want to get back in the third round. Yeah in. I think it -- that dialogue it had gone back and forth for awhile when -- in. Generally when you get -- player for picks trades today they tend to happen closer to were during the draft. Absolutely. He's a physical runner he's he's someone that. You know runs with good pad level powerful and and you know you. With with a lot of these players especially guys like him came in as a free agent you know there's. Penalties -- attachment but you know you've seen a player like him develop. That being said. You know you're constantly trying to look at look at the the team goals. And you know we felt coming into this offseason there was one position. That we had. Solid depth more than enough depth if you will that. How could we. You know possibly used that. To help ourselves either defensively or read another position need and in in this case. It ended up being part of how we were able to help ourselves defensively because you know we used his pick along with another but. But he's good football player and and I think. You know he'll find a good fit New York. You know you got. Now we just got cute. -- Well -- a young player that I am not as familiar with disk is I was an Expos whom last year. You know and it certainly we have some veterans when you talk about. -- -- We've we feel like we've got a good young running runner and in mark and so. And and look you I think even when we get into the draft -- -- we're constantly looking for maybe someone who has those traits we we've been fortunate. Two -- been able to sign two running backs even after the draft that. Were able to make our roster and you know they come in all shapes and sizes that position is a little unique so. It -- to be the initial for the you know. That we look at right now. Think coach Sean Payton here on WWL recap 23 round draft picks. If that's the position we see him as he's very athletic. Use the fastest forty at -- -- money can run -- very athletic. I think he'll put some weight on he's won a lot of college games I think his team won the national championship if I'm not mistaken this year. So he's been somewhere is real intelligent he's got good size and going. But his athletic schism is the one thing when you see -- And you measure of the quickness and you measure all those things so I see that being the position that he. That. We stay out of four and probably most everyone else is well. That that's probably a little tougher comparison I think -- John. The thing that's impressive. You know obviously he's got size but he's got good initial quickness. He's someone that's a hard worker good character. It's important to him. So you know I I think the thing that all of us the scouts coaches. Saw when when we read him and watched enough tape on him was just his. -- get off and his initial quickness is is something that stood out in in he's been disruptive. So. You know it gives us like the size and the players we've we've talked about trying to get bigger. And I think that. This is one step in that direction. Well we just. You know we just feel like you we wanna. Acquire a number of big bodies and you know we've got. Some guys in -- now that we we feel like give -- size this is another player you know inside you know I see this -- starting off as a nose. In regards to a position he would play and I think that. You know he's familiar with that having played at the Georgia and in a similar scheme. Wednesday night. -- -- It. Might be a little bit. Might be one level up you know I don't I think it was one double layer. But but that being said small school yeah. You see MS. -- when you look back now. -- Well I think it you know I think you're asking you do you see him start next year and I don't I think that. You know it varies with these rookies you know some. Seem to -- transition. And be ready to go. Very quickly. And then -- it takes more time I think it it just depends on. The individual when he comes in here and how quickly he picks things up. You know go back to our first year with Colston to earn a rookie camp when he was on the ground. And you know really struggled with his back and and struggled with his conditioning and and then all of a sudden that first training camp he really came on and and all of a sudden started the season index I think so you know to say he's gonna command here and in. Right away be at that position as a starter. I just think that I know he's going to be able to commend your compete. For that opportunity but I think we've got some some players ahead of them that are going to be doing the same thing so. You know we've been pretty disciplined and in and have had good fortune with finding. Offensive linemen at the right spot in the draft in. Hopefully this is another instance of that. Sort of offseason plan to have it happen. Do you guys feel good about being able to get one in the draft or or. Well what I. I think. With the departure of your mom yet I think we felt like him and that wasn't something that was surprising Mike you know another words. If that. Big number came from a team like it did Chicago than we we rumors certainly excited for him. And then. You know. Mickey you know I've discussed a number of different options and and and really that we feel like there's some internal competition which is which is a good thing -- we've looked closely at veterans on other teams. We signed Jason Smith you know not too long ago. And and then ended up having an opportunity to draft a player Charles Brown has played and as experts position so. You know that's something that's ongoing. I think that. You know that makes for an interest thing. Or certainly an important competition. That's gonna take place mostly during training camp when we get into the -- so. You know I think he. He you have to be prepared for players. Like two -- news got a great opportunity you have to be prepared to sit. -- a number -- comfortable with and and and then go forward. Will find a replacement in. You know that's that's an important position obviously so. I'm anxious to see how the two you know two or three players that we have currently on the roster do over there I'm anxious to see how. You know this guy does in and you know -- will continue to pay attention to other ways to really help our team out from a depth standpoint or create competition in. And I think that's you know the only way we know how how to improve a product in and get better. -- Well I don't know that he wasn't the right fit I think that it just became a position with a lot of -- We were able to draft to Mark Ingram in. No it was it was a position where. And I had mention this to Mickey we were we were clearly ready to. Move forward with our current depth at running back -- and utilize him in and do things that we've done before with him. But it was the one spot that we had. A little bit more depth than the others in and honestly. You know there are certain players at that position that you wouldn't be able to trade just because of a contractor because there on the rookie contract or a veteran player. And he was he was the one that made sense. You know he had one year left on his contract. Which you know I think. Would have been the upcoming season. We tender we tendered amended to because we knew that there'd be interest from other teams wouldn't wanna lose him without any compensation. But I just -- -- it's something where we were deep in and we felt like you know that was going to be something we could use to help ourselves. But it's your question specifically that you know the depth there was number one. He's a physical runner and he's someone that you know again. It was a you know big part of what we did offensively cheers in. -- gotta give us. Presence when he carried the football I think you know we'll have that still. But. But I think you know we were look at it more a team decision. Saints coach Sean Payton here on WWL -- left and and I come alive -- out. We'll all be okay. Well I think that was part of it. You know Todd was here in the defense -- coordinator interviewed for this show. And so we were able to see. A lot of film. Just on our valuations through this process but you know probably. We had a little bit more exposure to their program based on just the interview and then. The work outs but I think he was a part of it you know they had a lot of good football wears on that defense though and I think they would tell you that. There were number of guys that contributed to. This is the successful season they had. -- There. Well I think when you watch from often times you know it's difficult because teams get an out of there. Base defense. But. He lines up the nose in their 34 front and one of the things you see is -- real good initial quickness for a player of that size -- UC real good get off. He's light on this he's athletic. You know in it and sometimes that's unusual for players as big as he is in -- as much as he goes so. You know those are those of the redeeming qualities that I also think you know his work ethic and and all the background stuff with the coaches. People at school. All that was outstanding you know when we get a chance to. Interview him we had a chance to visit with them that the work out you know and so this is a player that. That we felt pretty comfortable with it at least we knew we was. And you know again it becomes more complicated as this trip goes on. -- to have what I mentioned last night you know potential early third round clout you know before the draft begins. And and again they're a handful of players that are leaving the cloud. Toronto someone that was really our first selection of that of the nine that we put in that -- you know day and a half ago. He stayed. John all the sudden -- was with someone that was still available. So. You know it. The as these guys start this attorney begin looking at your back up plan in case everyone is gone off the cloud -- we just kept waiting on. To tackle from Arkansas Pine Bluff to see that his name wasn't called in once. We're able to make that selection. You know that the idea we we we had again had dialogue with the Jets now we begin to think you're maybe there's a way for us to get second player. And fortunately we're able to do that. It. Well I think. It's always hard to say. When you think the players gonna go to mean you try to grade them based on how you see him but the process of trying to. Guess who else might like players sometimes. Not really science so. It was interesting to see that stack of eight or nine players. One by I want players with in the middle of the stack the Lauren stack. Receiver route we really like -- I think went to Pittsburgh. Shortly after us selecting. The tackle offensive tackle he was right in the middle of that. But. You know the trade probably would never happen. Had had John been drafted. I'm not saying it wouldn't of -- just wouldn't have happened tonight. Yeah I don't think that's his way that you play I think. His weight will be 34345. I think in that range. It is nice that people in the middle and above. Here caught -- now we're going we're when these two guys. Well that we at 33 magnets. Right in a row and the first magnate was the offensive tackle -- second magnate was John there was -- and the receiver. So we made the selection. For. For Armstead. Then began the process of the trade with the idea that you know hopefully John's going to be available. We also felt strongly about week now while this was going on -- was selected so that it really became just clear this trade will be just for one player. And it's John Jenkins and in if he's not available. We'll just we'll hold on this and and probably you begin to talk tomorrow about it. Probably most immediate -- -- had him rated. That are protected me missing throws he missed you -- that even now I'm ready for you. He had a high grade. Yeah I mean he beat these three players were guys that we had -- somewhere from the middle to the middle back of the second round. And that that's pretty common I mean. You know if you have a a decent group. Yet you have to have some numbers. You know you're you're always hopeful that. You know one or two of these players -- will slip through. But it's it's unpredictable and I've of seen it happen where. Everyone in your cloud disappears -- and then you know -- looked to your next plan or. Maybe moved back so -- we were fortunate I think in this case but. Time will tell you know these guys I like to make up like their character -- like the mental make up are Smart -- tough guys and you know one plated -- very big program the other one played at a smaller level competition but where they -- you know the won the national championship. So. I know I'm anxious to see other new coming in here transitioning into our team. Offers. For me and -- Do it. I don't know that I don't know that we I don't know that we had any other offers in years past for for Chris. You know this. Really is something that has taken place really over the last 33. Weeks to a month. And I I think you know -- make united discuss this. I think we felt comfortable with that. That round. In and again I think. You know part of it is eighty if if you're making a trade. And the -- for a fourth round selection. That's one thing. But if you're into the fourth round and there's a player you. Really clearly want it's easier to make that trade then just randomly trading it and then seeing what's available if that makes any sense. So. In this case it it kind of happened that way and that we were able to take that pick -- cars and go get someone in the third round so it. It's easier to make a trade with the vision of what that trades going to be as opposed to just. It representing a pick. You know. Especially with the players and in when you're talking about. A fourth round pick usually is good football player involved but there's more to it than that you know years left on the contract there's a lot that goes into. You know the value of what -- players is worth so. I think it's great opportunity for him like I said when we spoke at the beginning of the week about the offseason program. You know my my. Words to him or hate it. Regardless of whether you're here or somewhere else this is an important year for you period and I'd take advantage of the weight room and take advantage -- train in. And and and get yourself ready and in -- you know I told me I'm fully prepared and plan on having you and yet I recognize that. This is something that may come up. He was great we knew we talked about it for awhile you know I hadn't seen them you know for over a year. And then. He was he was here for the last half of the week of the work outs. And then I called them right after this and you know I spoke for awhile about it he was excited and I was excited form. Shortly here on the BW LI MF and aren't. What's the plan right now. But. We'll. We'll get started mall 4567. And you know with -- seven in the fifth and sixth round selection. It. I'm excited about tonight because when we when we started the day we started with you know -- separate guys and Armstead was a guy at the top that list and you're in then. That being said we were able to get -- get ourselves. I think good defense a player who has that presence in size we keep talking about it but I think that's an area. In every position where we can. Become bigger. And in this defense. I think it's gonna help us so he gave us that opportunity to. And and we were excited about last night's election as well minute. Look this is the time of the year were you you know everyone says we got our guys so but. Kenny was a player that we've waited we didn't know who's gonna make it fifteen. And we were fortunate that he did in for us there was -- there was no hesitation at all with that selection. We we have a clear vision for what we think he can do and the same thing happened today I know that. I know from experience that's not always the case. But I also know from experience generally when when you you you you sit and talk to everyone you you act like it was the case. Here. Yeah it. Target figure you know. And I think. Here's what happens and it's tough and there's there's more coverage. In this process than ever before. And and I'm not saying it's misinformation but often times. You know the discussion of quarterback getting taken the first five picks or potentially a quarterback -- -- is getting taken in the top ten in. You know all of us who pay attention to various. Mock drafts and in. Then you begin to feel like well that's a given that he's going to be a first round pick and then here we are after the third round and so I think. You know that's part of that is just the amount of coverage it gets. But to your question. That this class. At least how teams see it in regards to how they're drafting. Didn't grade the quarterbacks the way they graded him a year ago. And in so you know 34 years from now we'll see if if if a team -- -- has been able to get a good quarterback. Maybe unit in around -- we've seen this. You know as any time we go back and look at drafts you go back and look at you know players you know you've called steals or or great fines. And I think that. That's the that's the challenge with a good draft we spend 95% of the time on the first round pick in regards to our discussion. In regards to the focus. And I think what's important news. Really the all the other picks and then end up make him you know what can be a real good draft your team so. You always hopeful your first round pick can be someone that. Has success but equally as important are those those other spots. And I think that's. You know that's something -- that you know we've been fortunate -- Thank you.
