Topic of from almost on a mission because like I'm frightened for kids in what's happening with their bodies and and how were were shortening their lives so we're gonna talk once again but from a very different angle about childhood obesity. And then we're going to talk about. On the third hour and amnesty program. Let me tell you if you were picked up for anything minor. I'm weathered the -- to say this hearing in public or you're first time marijuana offense. Amnesty is out there so you really really need to heed that. Anyway it's going to be a good three hours and I hope you'll stay with us but we're going to begin with we have talked. So much on this program about the growing concerns of childhood obesity. -- have talked with medical doctors and dietitians. About what needs to be done. To save the next generation saved them from fat related diseases. Such as diabetes heart attacks and strokes. And even some cancers. Remember this generation may be the first cannot live as long as it's parents. And this doesn't begin to address the social pain the fat kids go through. In our continuing effort to address the obesity issue that's affecting millions of children. And will ultimately cost all Americans and increased health care cost. We invite -- issue psychiatrist. Christopher Levy to discuss a very interesting theory he has on what parents can do. To reverse obesity in their children. And at the same time reverse other destructive behaviors. That he believes are very interconnected. With getting fact. Optically -- has three rules. Rules that may sound simple. But maybe tough to implement in a society. Moving in what some feel is a destructive. Direction. And I thank you very much practically be for being with this joining us again. We have a lot to talk about I want to bring this first. Buckley -- has written a paper for the American academy for child and adolescent psychiatry. Which explains his three rules but before we're gonna get to that I wanna read the closing of the article. As he appeals to psychiatrist to join the fight against overeating and other destructive behaviors saying I'm quoting. Like the -- not sitting right here. Let -- not repeat the medical communities generally passive stance for more than forty years while cigarette sales boomed. And the disastrous. Health consequences of smoking were clear. I read that and I said to myself that is powerful stuff. Our -- you're you're talking to the medical community game. One arm and it the second him and you hit the nail on the head them because a lot of people died I think unnecessarily. From our turning the other way with cigarette smoking today we're very proud of -- all kinds of campaigns. Fewer people smoking. But are we doing the same thing with obesity. I mean it's obvious. The the data has been around for a long time just like it was around for a long time related to cigarette smoking. When people move from cigars. And pipes to cigarettes. The cancers moved from their -- In their lips into their lungs because they could inhale and they witty and this public helping would be you know became totally crew cleared that there were new diseases. Network -- mean people know it yet. We're all caught up in the society living in doctors -- a lot of the surveys head of more than 50% doctors smoking in the 40s60s and so they were so caught up in it. That they couldn't really. Decipher you know it couldn't have been message not to do it and -- blinded himself today consequences and that I think that's just like lights out today. -- -- -- Let's talk about. Something very interest and also was. That you find that obesity quarreling with. Other kinds of mental disorders which. Is that there's numerous. You know research articles on core relation between. -- CD and anxiety disorders ADHD. Depression. You know learning problems so there's a number of -- we -- -- the chicken in the eight issue because you know so so maybe kid to have some of these problems and become obese. But it does seem that obesity also causes elements I think you have more of these problems in the east kids in -- fainting in adults. And so you know. This is you know where our bodies are connected or of one whole body in a brain and and the rest is you know he has strong relationship and and then obesity clearly seems to have a negative impact. On your physiological washing your brain function and then also your ability for your body to function what you're self images. All the psychological ramifications too so I don't think it's surprising. That those correlations are there and now -- -- there there. So really what you're doing in the papers appealing to the psychiatric. Community. To say you have a responsibility we have a responsibility. To also address in our patience when you're seeing them for any number of things. About the of these -- via an I really hope that I'm speaking to more than just the psychiatric community I think you can. The whole medical community all the people who are really led by the medical community the medical community asked to. Sort of take the lead. And promotion of healthy lifestyles and changing some of these negative patterns in if we don't. You know really no one well we of the leaders we set the agenda with Al. We have to take responsibility. Kidney for instance if you would to have both names but if you had patients come -- and with their parents you're seeing younger people. And you notice that the whole family has. An issue with obesity. Do you talk about that even if they've come in for something clearly not. Yet well I I do I think it as a physician it's my responsibility to bring stuff -- yet they relate to health and so he if it is that there there is health problem already. The sooner you address these problems the more likely. That the family can turn it around it is a family systems problem is on an individual problem. There are individual characteristics in some people may lean towards this but -- three or four a year older by every year older even at twelve year old. Really controls environments and should be responsible for their own help it's their families responsibility. And so no I can't sit back and watch. Families. You know. Put their children in that situation have to intervene to try to stop the downfield negative consequences I feel like in. You know I I try to do it in in mindful manner that's respectful but I but I feel like I have to do it. You know so much and and maybe I'm projecting. -- -- -- growing up and I battled my whole life but. It was a report. Food ones he did well let's get these cookies. Pennington and all of this current. And if certainly if you have a child who is unhappy. Depressed hours struggling on many things. The tendency would be let's look at nice will the you know and and share food can make you feel better temporarily. Just like a lot of things can make you feel better temporarily. Am and if anything -- program into us to as a award it's the right so this is not something on a daily basis that's -- communism or award and we're very tune into it and parents can figure out. That what decades one and the kids signaling is of course released on so they're gonna. In Hance the negative or positive emotions. To try to bring out Tina they're gonna basically try to train their parents with what they do to get those highly palatable things that they really like. And a course that parents believe that there earlier on in the show about a in a lot of families the kids that train parents to give them what they want. And and I think we all see that very clearly. He's everything. But today he is talking about really an article that he wrote for a a wonderful publication that is addressing child obesity and from the perspective of well that the psychiatric and medical community must take the lead in trying to help this but also with and this is where. You know your very good points command you have sort of three rules. So let -- take it. From rule number one. He's well let's eat food. -- and I I like -- what did you -- MI ya in general memo money food OK and it's not that sounds simple. That's not saying to everybody is three rules sound very simple Bubba gonna break them down. So you -- saying eat food okay that parent that kid says I do little bit yeah yeah that's what. It's interesting why would food have to be defended from what's not food and and really. A lot of what I see people -- mean I would call a factory made food like product. Not actually -- so food is the stuff that comes from garden is. And comes off the trees in the human beings have been consuming for a long time as a very good record of -- at keeping us healthy. And we know how much TE because when he enough of it our tummies are falling -- Marvin. And so food regular stuff from gardens and -- trees. Is what we ought to eat. And if people could just think of that one thing if they wanna eat healthy you don't eat healthy -- -- buying eat what everyone but if you're really trying to. Eat healthy don't get caught up in all these other things it just confuse you. Primary thing to focus on eat food. Not food like factory made. Processed things okay. I I am a big reader of hands and backs of products and and I would like to have the minutes back that -- -- reading all of that means it when I'm reading is exactly how many chemicals -- -- going to. And and you know I don't want a lot of -- and -- a lot of the sugar -- -- you just try to balance things but the bigger issue is exactly what you're saying. What do we do. Well and says this is this thing and Michael Pollan who he tied at one of his books is called in defense of the great book and his subtitled he -- food. Mostly plants not too much and that's a sub -- the book in his other people that said this before me. But basically he goes through what he -- nutrition ism. Which is like this sort of fake science we have about that we can really break food down into the little pieces and we can put on us out of a jar and then you really know which -- We don't have that kind of science we know exactly what to eat meat you read the numbers and that's how we should eat. And what we've done is really confuse people about what's healthy and let's not helping companies have been great at adding in a budget. You know Hampshire you can spray on -- vitamins to stuff that has transition year and salt and fat. And and it kind of -- people believe -- has the stuff added to it. You know they manipulated they make it the collars and they sell it for kids especially which is problematic to me so -- put money on the box and bright colors and advertise for kids and all the sudden. That stuff. Which is an LP at all is for kids in the and is a societies and on long enough where we've kind of accepted that that's that's -- -- So when you're talking to parents. And you say eat her food and and they did their eyes glaze over today light up again yet but how to do it. Well you know hey everyone comes from different situations and and there are families that have totally lost their food culture and have no real food culture anymore so they pull everything out of a freezer -- my way. Pretty much you know or they pull it out in the of -- whatever package and you know I've been putting in the in the toaster on it yesterday there are families that -- we need to start from the bottom and you know you can't turn on a dime in -- -- things you don't know. By many of those families will then just switch to let's say a frozen dinners that has a better composition of fats and salts and sugars. But they won't how you gonna count delayed how much silly glasses and our. You know these other chemicals and additives and preservatives all that kind of stuff those are not have not been in the human food supply for a long time and they're not really tested and so. You -- modern science tell you whether that thing even though it's a diet product even though it has some healthy things in it is whether it's healthier non. And so DOD to get people to. Get out of all these debates I try to get them to just say. You don't focus on it and I think people can intuitively. Realize that the species has been around for a long time in mostly Benin where I'm calling food. And so most of them you don't get it. I think a lot of you know people are -- different -- change in some people who really wanna change in our interest did you know taking it and run with it and make changes. A lot of people you know didn't come in. Because that's what they wanted they came in because cicada is depressed -- has a learning problem or whatever I believe them to be related and I think science is pretty decent -- there related. But it's it is a hard sell most people don't come in and change and what I'm telling them is now expected here but for those who are open to it. But they have a child that is tugging at them saying I want the cookies and I want the fried chicken and I want this and this and you know persistence. How do you break to it yet well I mean is there news. Many ways but it's all gonna come down to parental story right so. Every family has her own patterns and parents -- priorities in the easily or some low hanging fruit that they should probably start -- But how are technically they do it it has to be a parental leave led phenomenon. And eat -- parents. Some children as I mentioned before are little chess players and they try to get what they want and they have strong signals. To tell us -- they want and -- flop on the ground in yell and scream in Costa -- span while and I get it TO. And so you know parents have to be OK with that they have to realize that that's a normal response from a kid -- attached to those things or wants those things. And that's part of modern parent teen it's not in this not the 1930s anymore people are not you know with their -- in starving. We have the opposite problem we have -- over consumption problem. And now -- limits on kids in its relation to you know the media and put the food they eat. Ian to making them you know sort of you don't get up and exercise -- at -- That's what parents need to do in 2014. It's a different challenge from -- when we grew up and it was the last you know ten patient out there. Less temptation but also. -- didn't ask me. How writers dinner and -- Q. Yes and not the -- fix our favorite things shouldn't but it was not this debate. In discussion it -- yeah this is dinner. Tomorrow -- -- it's become very dysfunctional in France by tradition you know kids eat breakfast lunch moute has snack after school and then dinner and that it. They don't need any other you know so. They have traditions in places that sort of taking care of that. And in some ways -- blown up all of our traditions and that it assemble what is gonna do. Whatever feels -- -- or are we beat up -- scheduler complex in the modern world sometimes we haven't been able to to do those things. But yet we need to get back to some limits and some traditions and -- summer teens. And a lot of those pre teens even we can't tell exactly why they work or what they're doing. There's still really good for us they help enforce some discipline and stimulants -- daily if you look at statistics it's not -- draw our Christmas Day. That debt or Jazz Fest that causes a problem it's your everyday routine and those -- need to be strict says that you can enjoy the celebrations Larry celebrations are very. We wanted to have so -- yeah. No I'm. But Richard Wright and lives are different we have two parents working sometimes we only have a parent who's trying to do everything. And so time constraints and so that I can see the thing if I can throw it in the toaster governor in the microwave but there has to be almost the the commitment of prioritizing health. I wanna be held a moment could be healthy and certainly if I'm bringing a child into. Psychiatric setting I know something's not right so let us. Let's -- -- achieve that from all angles. Who write everything that you can do to help easy you know we you should be doing ride and that's part of the challenge I guess today is we've become very. Diagnosis focused and like brain disease you know and a science is not that you know advanced and and I think people over. Invest in labels and I think the same thing in in adult Madison a -- you know everyone's worried about their cholesterol level wall. Let's talk -- does does downfield diseases. Are nice 'cause we need to name -- we mean have. Sort of vocabulary but it's the causes. That we want to talk about. -- the causes that are the problem not the disease that. The end right let's talk about the costs. When we had doctor southern on recently talking about the and -- -- with a doctor southern who lives door on but we was a nutritionist Molly Campbell and she was saying to -- you're aware of that's the food products of today the sugar salt and fat. Together in so many many products. It's like crack in -- mean it affects our brains when you talk about brain. And it want we want more more more you have something an article about an is you just said you eat until you're not hungry. It's your fault. But so many of us. Eat when we're not hungry -- if it's it's happened it. Willie aided and you live we are creatures of habits and that's what you have to enforce daily disciplined you know adults need to do that the parents need to do it and then they need to transmit that to their kids. I will also mention that. Natural foods. Have some limit on how much she snacking on many. And so what are the problems we have these are the things we snack on our highly palatable if you put she goes in the and they've done it in rats. You know instead of their food they will keep beating -- -- until the fact. And they'll do they'll go through some amazing stopped again at those TS if you just put in the regular -- policy tiller pulled and they leave them. And they come back later when their -- again and neat. I want to human talent but not Africa and I want everyone to stay with this -- reacted to the newsroom but we'll be right back. And the -- -- the did it really is two parts one is began in that we see it way too much and it's tragic that we. Put our kids in schools where now they've taken away a lot of the recess and a lot of the even in kindergarten it's like the book learning in -- trying to rather than the experiential learning whether touching the trees in going down there you know so. We've really change school in a way that is hostile to that says the way to the nature of the kids made it very hard and not fun forum. Said that he is a piece of it in if you look at the adult literature. That you know this more you sit you know this injury guy mean is pretty much and is also than a negative. Consequences of city too much with human beings were not made to to be in this position for that amount time that Oran and so. We need to figure out ways to get ourselves up to work upright to -- abstaining -- to do that kind of stuff. And then to walk and to move around -- and not everyone I mean I think that dead and medical community has been to India GMs and like saying you gotta go work out. Well I'm I'm not sure that most of the people mostly timer gonna find their. Exercised -- working now but I think we need to give people out into nature they need to be doing stuff out in the net natural world losers too lenient calming to them. He and you know to meet. Gist did daily routine of things gardening fixing things you ammonia on landscape being. Those type things. We do less and less of because we have all the machines that we need to get back into those things and there are good for us and put us outside -- out of the natural -- -- unnatural lights and artificial rooms and so -- get up and move in and actually -- -- that the car with daddy's. It is Ian the exercise has been really under emphasized by the medical community is an incredibly important part of our physiology and people who are overweight but are fit. Actually get pretty decent health outcomes be voting don't really -- mention or talk about it that much but there are a lot of people who are a little overweight even in the obese. Range. But -- their fit if they're exercising. They actually do okay you know I had dinner Sunday with a woman -- nine mean. And she says you know I just don't have time to an exercise class so she says she climbs five flights of stairs three times and up and down three times and a I looked at her in wonder. And now she is moving. Ranked eighty keep going and what she stopped doing something you tend to lose two -- -- Problem for one. Even for adults they need to keep doing stuff and for kids we need to -- them doing stuff when they're young so they're on their feet. And you know this is this is this is a physiological. Reality but it's also a metaphor. Your bones only become strong when you pound them. And you pound him every day and they get stronger and if you don't count your bones when you're an adolescent your bones and never become as strong as they should be. And this is part of what we're doing to our kids is we're allowing them to never achieve the strength that they should have. Both in their bones and in other ways because they're not getting those days week straight hitters every single day which -- -- -- -- the human being is made. When you have patience and and you say that I mean you know again there what is the reaction. -- many of them into too many of them are frustrated with the system the school system and a and this little world there and that has. Her vented their kids from being more active. So almost all of families want their kids to be more active. And so many of them are frustrated we also tend to live in -- more super either urban neighborhoods that ever are not that safe. Or in suburban neighborhoods that don't and don't parks an easy places and so. You know they may be living in house but they didn't build a -- dating constructed in you know the other some choice. There's not a lot of choices for people who don't have tons of money to live in a place we have access to nature and parks and all the things you really need. Those places are very few in modern society so they're frustrated and they know their kids should move more almost everyone wants to kids out. Two and stuff we'll stay with -- -- we're going to be talking about practically -- his third rule and I bet you can guess what it is stay with this. He calls it rules of thumb three simple ideas. For overcoming the complex problem of childhood obesity. And we are with doctor Christopher Kelly being from LSU Health Science Center psychiatrist. And we -- on to rule number three. And this when I just -- the commercial has to be the toughest. Honor silence yes yeah so mean today children are growing up in adults have worlds filled with. Screens and there's constant chatter. And -- ways and its dairy. You know and a lot of and engaging video games and they're entertaining these leisure activities which famously IR. Hold the brain of the did. Make a connection they get very attached to it. And it's very clear that in their -- with exercise it interferes with academics in -- -- to sleep in and for a lot of kids in the long run in inner fears severely with their health. And so we need to be much more vigorous about setting limits our kids. Parents need to set limits on themselves and that's a lot of the problem is -- they don't want to give up I mean you know I have the parents who they -- I have -- 400 pound plus parent who won't give up their. Did media. And you know their kids are probably not likely to die he had to be gathers. Take away either. But you have to honor silence and realize that human beings were not made to take in this much kind of information this much noise. And frankly there's a lot of advertising in a lot of stuff that's advertised towards kids is is jump. Most of it -- -- But I I just think it's typical -- that we were saying. If you start to drop off like that it's a lot easier but I mean the genie is out of the bottle here out an artist kids have all this equipment and and you write some of it is nothing but fun and games. But it is you cannot sleep with your cell phone in your chest you cannot have a computer screen on 20%. And now how do you say that to. Yeah well I mean it is and they've grown up with TVs in their room was able now higher attach of their -- attach of their video games and once -- attached to it they feel like it's the players they feel like they have a right to. And when you start to interfere with it they get -- just like in it is there's a bit of an addiction is addictive property just like there's a sugar just like there is and it's you know drugs. And these kids will get very upset when you when parents element they're gonna be you know this is -- dynamics. The indicated thinks you're gonna punish mean now I'm gonna punish you. And then they go to war right and and is is is and isn't a problem you have to be prepared. That that's their response you're gonna get when you've allowed it shop to get that attachment and then you take it away. They they're upset and like get in an Italian. And that it is so you have to stand strong and hope the addiction cut back or that it is filled with other fun things right. Put in -- -- his idea of displacement to sell all this time spending with. Electronics is displacing them playing sports and exercise in it -- getting exposure to nature and being outside in so. You know that they don't even realize what they're missing and they don't they don't realize that the impact of course we could expect he would say understanding negative downfield impact. And the correlation with more time at electronics and bad grades is incredibly clear there's been studies although you know up and down. Shelling the more tied to more attached CR TT VN BA games. The last -- -- to school and if you want your kid to be a scholar. In house and my kids is your comments at TD any of -- games on weekends and schooling schooling that's zero minutes -- So during the week no TV and yet. And it did they scream and shelved and dated than they used it's fine after a while and then it calms the house it's it's much better now. And on the weekends that you've pretty much this year we knew where leaders from restrictions about what they can watch so. I'm do you have young children. Yeah I to gain on number eight in twelve of them. And so I don't know but again it now they have and you -- it -- during the week. Yeah it's better yet they really in it allows them more spaced him to do their own stuff and then announced -- so buried. And they also you don't get more sleep those studies is now almost thirty minutes. Of less sleep per night if you of the TV in your room. For kids. Mean that's a lot and that app overtime and that will make you ADHD. You know if you don't have enough -- get enough sleep he it will it will make you look like -- as a -- -- -- In our final minutes we have a quick call. What really quickly became. -- -- -- I agree with you -- -- natural food and going back to fifty years ago a lot you -- plans to marry a significant. But how do you feel about three of the apprentice food which is the next upcoming thing and pink slime and all the pro promotion up a lot of medication. That is. Promoted by the parent that is promoted by the medical and incumbent upon the finger and you. But I had a pediatrician and actually. Gave my son age. Say -- -- shot without my permission that was 25 years ago. You know when a parent really is being -- but has no control of many things we need help from you all -- so you know how do you feel about those. Thank you -- yet anywhere where grimace than the same page and mean yet the you have to think about the profit motive and the ways that doctors are trained in all these kind of things have infiltrated -- since some. And we knew we were much over believe. In the ability of medicines to cause health to make people healthy there's no medicine that's gonna make us healthy we can only make Al self help the there's certain things that -- can do. It's especially good for infections and things like outside the body you know in surgeries are great when you have an emergency. But as maintenance -- eighteen B pills and surgery it has to be what's now. I cannot thank you enough doctor Christopher and this is its eye opening and yet I'm gonna remember the story they are simple enough for us to remember.
