Is continuing the fighting gay cardiovascular diseases and defense. Growing up I wasn't talking about sports golf and fishing thing that always good their fathers not induce. You'll go one on one with founders than it was say could give you a funny Lee about his organization colleague mentor is an impact the lives of young boys. And there's something about having had a roomful of people there has been about the art that their passionate about for it motivates you on the third day they come out that you Alley. More on by you writers love and always providing inspiration and encouragement. Those who write and love the written word. That's when he seventeen heart and soul gala is just around the corner we're joined now by doctor Robert Kendall chief of cardiology and director of two lanes heart and vascular institute a doctor handle thanks to being with us it's a pleasure thank you. We'll tell us about the heart and soul gala and what it's all look. The American Heart Association heart muscle Kallis held annually. And it's primarily a fund raiser better also brings together the community of New Orleans and it's professionals in cardiovascular disease American Heart Association is telling people about heart healthy things to do and making sure that people. Take advantage of all of the things that can be offered in terms of preventing heart disease. They also fund a lot of research and a lot of the proceeds that come from the funding of those the heart and soul gala go directly to researcher in fact. The American Heart Association has invested more than two million dollars in research in New Orleans alone by various programs at LSU Health Science Center and Tulane University. Are we making strides and gains in the research. Oh absolutely I think everyone is quite aware that heart disease death rates have plummeted over the last twenty or thirty years. In a large part due to the medical research that's been funded through the American Heart Association and other organizations so. Really there has been a major step in the progress over the last several decades people do not die from heart attacks anymore in fact they survive. And now with heart failure which is still one of the most predominant illnesses in our community. We've made great strides to again and survival as well as in quality of life and I think especially for the New Orleans community people need to be made aware of what we can do unfortunately Louisiana as rather unhealthy state in fact we get very low grades and that's. Largely due to the fact that were obese and we don't move around enough and we need to make some changes in the American Heart Association. Really is the voice of the science and telling people this is what they have to do and there's really great evidence to do this. And again all of the money raised with the gaelic invest back into the community if that's what's amazing about this type of fund raising event because a 100% of the proceeds from heart muscle gala go right back to the New Orleans community. For education as well as for research and other outreach programs such as CPR training. Putting external defibrillators in a public areas to help resuscitate people so. Really every dollar that goes there is coming back right to the community and this is really important because. Heart disease remains our number one killer of men women and children. That here in Louisiana around the country that's here in Louisiana but it's also nationwide it's really an amazingly depressing statistic because we don't wanna be number one anymore we want every be replaced and I you know we're making strides and the rates of death and and bad things happening have really decreased but it's still a major health problem. We're joined by doctor Robert handled chief of cardiology and director at Tulane heart and vascular institute talking about. Our disease and cardiovascular disease in general and specifically talking about the upcoming 2017 heart and soul gala. It's may nineteenth USA gonna take place illicitly interesting features this time around. Well it's gonna be held as you mentioned and may nineteenth it'll be held at the Hyatt regency right here in downtown New Orleans that'll be starting at 6 o'clock with a silent auction and then we'll proceed later on through a cocktail hour and then alive auctioned they'll be dining and dancing and excellent entertainment but they'll also be stories. Stories from the community about heart disease and how it's impacted on their selves and on their family and one notable person will be telling his story and it's really really dramatic two year. How he survived. Would normally critical event in a lot of that is based on the research that the American Heart Association has funded. We mentioned that you the director of the two in heart and vascular institute. A little bit about what you do there. Well you know since Katrina there's been a lot of changes in in all of health care delivery here in New Orleans but you know we're proud to say that the two lane were really really growing by the faculty is expanding. We're continuing to reach out into various areas in the community. And importantly we're continuing the tradition of two lane with cardiovascular research and excellence. We also obviously provide what we believe is excellent clinical care and that's gonna continue I've only been here since January but I've been doing this awhile. My future hopefully is going to be one that's very exciting and no we're really thrilled to watch and witness what's going on at Tulane and and in greater New Orleans with regards to health care. There's a lot of concentrated effort now with all the different. Health care facilities and what the research and everything that's happening down on Tulane avenue. Well well absolutely and and here in New Orleans you know we're such a diverse community we we have to learn not only how to take care of patients but how to deliver that care and how to provide the best. Heart healthy tips and and medications and procedures. And you know this is a work in progress you know we've we call it practicing medicine but it's also practicing research because we're never really gonna get to the goal. We're gonna continue to improve and I'm very pleased with the support that we've had from the university and from the community and in improving heart health. But to get information on what they. About gala where can people go but they can go to New Orleans hard ball dot heart dot org. Which is the website and if you just simply look at New Orleans American Heart Association. Here too but it's. Once again called the heart muscle hill and that's going to be held on main. Exactly and you could be with the my pleasure thank you. Paying it forward to making an impact has many looks and approaches but at the core is commitment and giving from the heart. Since its inception in 2011 mentors of Saddam Hussein have held. Young Bogle is boys were joined today by the found a son of a saint Vivian sunny leak Sonny thinks of me that says thanks for having me on my goodness 2011. Yes today feels like thirty years but its own and then held hostage is. You know we hope to keep going monologue so back to the moment when you decide that this was going to be away many people know the name a few dad in the saints but the for those who haven't heard this powerful story. What was going on with you at the time well for me I was asked by my father passed where I was three raised by. A lot of women Wasilla from government house on Sunday is me in about twelve women and oh and as well that you know when I was growing up I didn't. I wasn't talking about sports you know going gulf officiating. You know building things I don't know about two run Home Depot all those things that you know boys. Do their fathers I didn't do. You know out in my twenties I had to learn all that and an I had some great jobs are worked with the saying it's over with voodoo or work with. Would the zephyr is and you know allow those experiences and even in jazz were out in those experiences really shaped. Me going into my thirties. And I I had to learn a lot of my own. And so I just saw some of the challenges that boys without fathers have. And I wanted to support them and I realized that a lot of boys out here doing. A lot of these crimes. Did did that trauma and realize you know and his charm that hasn't been dealt with. And so we wanted to support that were mental health services which is being there for him. You know a lot of what we do this award and an opportunities for men prepare them for those opportunities you know. We you know my mother provided tremendous amount from me in a lot of you know of the -- the crew rows around was very positive you know I mean those guys from aboard and you know doing really big things and in the city and elsewhere. And you know it's about where who's around these boys and you know we just we just wanted to support them in anyway a programme of the formula. And has been working. So we haven't had a boy has been arrest of him with fifty boys and none of them have been arrested who work on preventative measures. But these are boys and fathers have been imprisoned their arm prison right now they've been murdered. So you look at the site going the probability of them becoming. One of these statistics is very very high. And you know we've been lucky so far and you know just wanna continue to do our part and I inspired me to ship that is so. As you semis separation is is my own personal stories and just wanted to get back in you know are really saw a change. Probably second or third year in the program I just. Via. The smiles on the boys' faces then they always when it's suggests ideas for us to do that was showing up. You'll where where have activities there was just you know show the office and thus and I knew we had some special you know they graze Saudi improvement. And we started getting a lot more mentors. Involve people worn out and I think that's what it. That's on our realize that in essence. Bush both of those who are listening and I feed being called to do something. The matter what it is you know I hope you hear from from Sonny is that you just take the first death. That's only come in there with the right intentions and it just grow. It doesn't know a lot of people. You know they make you scared about mentor amber it's really it's it's showing up when you see gonna show up and being yourself. You know being yourself. Repeating that and so you know it's not this you know. This special formula of confusion though that it doesn't have to have this the last name. All know and I don't know I don't know I mean it's. It's the united if you don't have the time to to take on one boy you know it's join an organization was just. You know conditioning yourself to just do to help doses out. On a daily basis whether buyers about a snowball at. The snow must then and has sparked have a conversation you know if somebody opens up a door for you or or you know a woman out of at a store you know talking to him saying Greg good job you know budgeted at a recognize and boys that are doing great I'm just really wanted change and narrative of of boys and girls of color in the city you know I mean I think we. We say aloud about what negative was going number four for each negative there's ten positive in this is not being told you know and you know we his head and media have a responsibility is to share that you know and and that's one reason why I appreciate you having me on is that a lot of success stories. You know three or mob boys that have their graduated from some of Hussein and the scholarship right now in college. And these a boy than a first generation I mean even today it to does everything for a generation. You know. College students and so there are setting the tone for the rest of the board of the program there the example. And I didn't do that a lot where those who have gone that a program actually mentor and more with apple on oh absolutely I mean the boy in the program now even after you boys join at age ten and there with the Philly team so. You know that the 151617. Ozolinsh over the 1011 into audio so. We start their real early and we do a lot of activities too violent a lot of our mentor to volunteer projects. So you know whether it's sex Bonser and a second harvest food bank or rebuilding New Orleans or. You know helping people were groceries that this you know at the store it and it's all the time volunteer and with some of a saint. I'm a city park we do a lot of activity so. You know their condition to giving back to me that we did a survey on our boy that we actually what is the the favorite part of sort of saying. And the number one thing was giving back was them giving back because I think what's happening is they actually have something to give back you know I mean a lot of times you boys are. Don't have well when there with us and they're able to. Give resources to other people if feels real good an accident value. We're joined by Saddam the saint founder and vivienne sunny leak and other today's today's Mother's Day Sunday Mother's Day just as they and a lot of I know I doubt it but Father's Day is next in mind yes so letting you all doing to recognize that date and also attract more young men to the program. Well judicially we'd we accept boys in December so you you know people can apply Iran on our website and from December 1 of December 20 we look at these applications December 25 we actually let the boy is no Christmas morning after and a program. We're at about Tim was a year. To the group but this year what we're gonna do is add add another group com a voice to our program we're gonna let him know Father's Day in the morning Father's Day. That there excepted. Which is which is very special would get calls all the time. Com from moms you know odds and palaces that once you have the boys are rolled and our groups are as good that there were able to help some more boys. And by the cities world do this for about eight years and is really a lifetime and never really leave but it could be really special is really good for us in the committed donation. An honor of their father a father figure I think that you know that's really special. For Cuba the top honor that's so you know we really you know we support follow his voice was very important for us to continue to work him in in order to do that. You know we need the resources. We've been doing good over the last six years arm for the and a small organization. I think we've gotten to the were not allowed limits on our boys but. You know just another opportunity for people to support our group and so yeah I mean those those two things good applause they're gonna have some. Activities when our boys will have a nice dinner with the boys. You know we'll all get together and does this kind of you know what I'm thinking is possibly reading a you know they write a letter and they -- suit their father so with the kind of it's trying to get that emotion now we move you know we don't talk about. Then be a far listen group. You know we we rarely ever talk about that with the county that's a mental health services animal you know this will be. Coordinate that form and so this is really an opportunity for them to really get some stuff out you know some. Some stuff they've been thinking in but also I think for them to realize that. There's a big there's a group of men. That they are for them take the place so father but to guide them and we're going to be there at the dinner table and you know give him. We have fifty boys in the a lot of mentors not a lot of good things. Don't look if I do what we'll figure it out but you know so if you wanna shed did this story is that that is limited ornery didn't just one derided him. You know we'll we'll bury it sucked and I don't know but. They I think is important for the boys to to do that if delight. It is cathartic absolutely. What is the website people can learn more about who you are what you why you do it well website as some of the same dot org and I really ever advise people to go social media are social media handles us this son of a saint. Board for some assay or anything go through as she pitches. Oval have been doing over the last few years you know. And that's a good way to to check up on. Thank you for being with the site at a coffee shop yes let's hope we shouted god is off right now Monica thing hit the topic here. Agree with that dog they do everybody good everybody. We are joined by Lisa Harrington of the founder of by you writers club Lisa thank you so much for joining us today thank you are happening. Take back how you get the idea to do media for your writer's school. Went out to be. I will. And why I've traveled for work. I would like hobby I never thought about sharing it with anyone until I thought traveling and I visited. Conference or writers magazine in New York City and found that I loved interacting with other writers. How old apple. Mathematicians and Nolan is a big reader for nonfiction. But could. Action and talk to fictional characters. But when I went to the conference account you know Google Earth people that Wear the same as me. And it is tremendous for me to collaborate with others find the cult leader beard so people that would please get me ripped. But our time and be back. And I probably. Had a column corporate SP. Came back com to energize and and going on my community and and me and a woman is live in town briefly. Started the group actually online and I went to the meeting if you can believe it really need. Manager. And the topic of managerial that should it come back. It did figure it out and people. And we were all at the same point we are writing and cheered in making. Public. Hand and we just got together every two weeks and I kind of started from there and had my cue from political outlook people well. And now and have a ball do we have to lead month. Generally every 2 weeks on Thursday evening but we have speakers come from that pound we published. Writers in the group self published internationally published now we're looking at you know 25260. Members at this point. And have a solid hit me there are people that common goes to the needy and I'm reading it. So it'd them into the court now we are large group we go to conferences together and cheer on each other and collaborate. If it's incredible experience. At least you all in the north sure what is it about the arts and writing that we're hearing so much that's coming out of the man the Ville area of the North Shore area. Hi you know I believe that have a few dynamic people that want you. Collaborator. Are fine they're they're tried that he will. And let me that the north sure to happen more laid back feel a little more. A little less intimidating more inviting. And yeah could be invitations out on and they'll come up. But I think the writers come from Oliver say they drive them well and track that they come from Slidell that would ensure that yet the track and I know there's something about. Having them believable people are passionate about the art you're passionate about. Motivate you on their evening come out and que Al. At they would they're her college Q Allard let me comment at least twenty minute terribly. And then after we finished the meeting and went and got him look like accounting party that has no one to go off. It is a great encouraging environment forward you would hear art. We're joined by Lisa Harrington and she is lead by you writers club it's a large probably the largest meat of writing group in the New Orleans area. So he took a little bit earlier Lisa about there's often a hesitancy tissue once work with. So much outside and do you find that groups help people to get over that part of not wanting or are hesitant to share their writing a share their words are share whatever their passion it is. Yet you can't. Think lighter engine all our income was an enormous amount of time along writing you know are on Medicaid. And it's really difficult. Like that type of heart and puke. May effect the news to come out to a group of strangers and cut their art but I have to say well here in a rental people are passionate about. And why things. You hear them for the first time read an excerpt from something in Britain. You hear from one class. Or come on people that really made the cut and it's an example a company to written it really helped someone else who put our time has met up with a group of writers may not ever hear anything you know with their code and remembered we encourage it and you know encourage people who can read during the meeting I have about thirty minute but the in the me earmark all our. Ever wanted to read. About three minutes about the outward at something they've written. It could be internal it can be you know anything and we want to hear all of them you know quarterly we have what's called reading it and it's wonderful being English he Grammy carving and so gracious in her being on a day closes it. And they opened a parent that parity and me in by Eric higher grade in their family and friends come out and technically an open mind and what I mean by that. You don't have to reserve threw me the has so many great writers want to read that you come out and read up. I hit a minute but longer than the detonating. And you have to rainbow of people that are close to use not a member from the grave. They're they're that the point you and that it probably not that popular. Well that sounds fantastic they go to talk about some Euro writings and you've published three books and have a new one coming out very very soon actually debuting in the month of made. But for those who want to start their own writing group far our media group public would you suggest that they do. I'm truly. See and everything are. Having. I'm a big day is always get back in the beginning match dollar like it at seven people on the quickly grew to about hand. But it will file and we would go to a restaurant copy shop. Bookstores. For the week get together comparable. Environment in public went out. In the fourth and it would be to a joint so we started at all being new and we kept growing and growing and having Mac in these Whitney's. Kind and and not quite meeting time. Yeah week. The week and I'm. Maybe different partners. And just being on on is a wonderful well. Start something can accompanied by a group to go walking. Group. Home school mom looking there and meet other uncle mom if you have hobbies interests don't like what are very popular here in our area. But I'm really think that the group at anchored. Indeed that one. One and a big. Change in Iowa. But what our group the intrepid air and yet we have border published author and speaker coming up in about. Going on there are world. In the topic has come and be more than fairly kind of dictate what the meeting now. The consistency helps tremendously. Tell us about your -- works you would but have you published in what was your camera. I'm my son is women action pack will be publishing later in the year a couple of my young adult novel. I have right now read book out you were e-book one is any book in. Enact one starring. The e-book that he out in big plan which are to be counted to contribute I don't advertise at all but it what we call why. I iBook it. Hobo which about Canada on Amazon and it kind of has a lot of the count out there acting that way. Make my other novels well and makes it more popular and people about what site. My new book but it is coming out party I'm really excited about that in the league or the theory that we've. This year. He does a little bit but giving it all the way into it and about it and now. And the city to a top fictional right now. Know them and they'll figures that means we're in for a start that week in and out and I'm old and your name and path. Who declined entry in this town. A year ago it wouldn't like it wanted and that I want Audrey his neighbor and and sit in life. Identity. You that this is a series is that awaits a go in publishing at. Are connecting with your readers. It has bid an area that we examine its writers all the time and die. By you writers. We have we got a lot of retired we get it around a huge correlation in. That long. Theory. You happen to those salacious reader who come back wanting more loans big pharma characters. But women action aid their boyfriends. And acting more war are definitely in to deal or your business if you. And it is a business at the end of the day it's it's your passion it's a gift but. We're going beyond just what you write for yourself you have to look at it as a business and where we are trend lies in this business. Why height and arm. You know a lot by hired who have interest in publishing order financial gain they normally by march election. Credentialed injury Sunday. So in our group a lot of varied interest in publishing. Them count their publishing board and to gain. But if you're injured in the coming Miller pull time job. It actually you have to follow the trend in the changes. Yearly and that's something that hurt and you know went under and I'm looking at a few years ago. Things started changing back and about 80% of the picnic in the market. Well he pulled it more. You don't Eva L. And the Indy operators would not let call on two particular writer. Truly have built a strong Bryant and we are it's a couple writers group has found that. Building back. And having your you know editor graphic artist rapid designer. Collaborators. Is key for your the united hitting decades writing by your do you have a group of people can help I think. And the writer evening one hand and the business. Writers they certainly aren't you coming out cover. That. Hi Gil. Look back back matter on your cover. And I web site there is a lot more to pressure. How can people learn more what's the web site. Are the able to volumes social media. They can bind by you right. Under by you writers club on me dep dot com and you can find more about me and my books on. Hearing him. And Harrington thank you so much for being with us and we are. That is our show for today thinking so much for joining us until next time I enjoyed this someday and the rest of your week.
